Gray Sabres double up Red Wings on Rink No. 2

The Squirt Gray Sabres defeated the Red Wings, 4-2, on Sunday in front of a standing room only crowd on the Pepsi Center Rink 2.

The Red Wings and Gray Sabres traded end-to-end rushes before settling down to some serious hockey.

The first period was an indicator that both teams had come to play. Red Wings Adam Herr, Connor Lalime, and Cole Federiconi each led rushes only to be stoned by Gray Sabre goalie Joe Burke.

Not to be overlooked, Joe Arias, Emma Hubert, and JB Beck led an onslaught on Red Wings goalie Theresa Meosky who was up to the task. At the 5:07 mark of the first period, Connor Lalime let a blistering shot go that Burke stopped with his blocker. The puck popped up and landed behind Burke. Before the Gray Sabres could clear the puck, Lalime skated in and buried the rebound.

The second period showcased both team's defenses. Ella Frauenhofer, Christian Baran, Lillian Markley, Marissa Notaro, and Nathan D'Angelo stopped the Gray Sabres offense, many times in spectacular fashion.

The Gray Sabres did not quit however. As the second period began to wind down, the Gray Sabres wound up. Austin Maciok, back at forward after playing a few weeks on defense, found himself alone in front of the net after Antonio Zendano then Brian Kowalski outhustled the Red Wings to feed him the puck. Maciok buried the shot into the net.

Less than a minute later, Angelo Derossi found the back of the net short side. The goal began with Jack Cooper breaking out of the zone, feeding Katelyn Koester a perfect pass, and Koester sliding the puck to Angelo. Before the cheering ended, Marc Giangreco moved through the Red Wing defenders, deked Theresa Meosky and found a small gap to score, assisted by Gabe Jewula and Benjamin Lackner.

The Red Wings fought back. Peter Hillery, Jamison Garvey, Erin Jozwiak, Austin Hyer, Tristan Dougherty, and Piotrowski poured shot after shot on Burke. With 2:42 left in the game, and with the net empty, Adam Herr found a chink in Burke's armor assisted by Erin Jozwiak. With only a goal separating both teams, it became tense. The Gray Sabres fans took a cleansing breath when less than a minute later, Zendano scored with assists credited to Maciok and Peter Gossels.
