Amherst boys bowling upsets Tonawanda The Amherst Central boys bowling team picked up its biggest win of the season, easily defeating Tonawanda, 6-1, at Airport Lanes last Wednesday. The Tigers' "A" team won all three games, 855-817, 708-700, and 786-753 and the "B" team picked up two points, 716-648, 721-633. Brandon Jeffords (252), Kyle Schmidt (243), Justin Garus (223), Eric Michalski (203, 223), and Chris Oliver (224, 200) rolled high games for Amherst. Michalski (619) and Jeffords (600) had high sets. "It was our best team performance of the year," said Amherst coach Jason Beckman. "Everyone showed up. We are at our best when we get contributions from everyone. We aren't going to rely on one person to get the job done. We have been close in a lot of matches this year, but couldn't quite finish them off. This one we started out strong and stayed focused throughout." Beckman said his "A" and "B" teams won their first two games to take a 4-0 lead. Michalski had a clutch tenth frame in game two for "A", needing a double and pin count in the tenth to seal the victory. Other matches Amherst have had since the New Year were a 6-1 defeat to Cheektowaga on Jan. 8 at Airport and a 5-2 win at Springville on Jan. 10. Beckman said the Cheektowaga match was a lot closer than the final indicated. "We lost one "A" game by 39, one by 38, and the other one Cheektowaga bowled a 901," Beckman said. "The "B" team got on track in the last game with a 751." Jeffords (220) and Corey Rotterman (217) shot high for the Tigers. Michalski threw a 566 high set. Amherst's win over Springville was not easy. The "A" team only took one point (795-768) and lost two other games close (711-793, 704-731). The Tigers "B" squad grabbed all three points (722-549, 646-617, and 610-609). Garus threw high games of 256 and 221 and match-best 656 set. Schmidt rolled a 215. Amherst lost 7-0 to Maryvale on Monday and rolls versus Pioneer at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Sweet Home boys The Panthers crushed Iroquois by almost 1,000 pins for a 7-0 victory on Monday at Manor II Lanes. The win improves Sweet Home to 5-2. Ryan Kaminski led Sweet Home with a 664 set with games of 234, 248 and 182. John Grunzweig also had a 600 series with a 602. Grunzweig had games of 194, 225 and 183. Not far behind Grunzweig was Peter Schaefer, who rolled games of 205, 183 and 206 for a 594 set. Aaron Klein had a 593 set with games of 181, 222 and 190. Captain Dan Kaminski had games of 234 and 205 for a 592 set. Other high games were rolled by Bill Klein (203) and Brett Kreiss (200). Last Wednesday, Sweet Home came back to beat Hamburg, 5-2, also at Manor II. The Panthers were tied at 2-2 but down eight pins in total going into the third game. Sweet Home came through winning both games on "A" and "B" to win the match. High for Sweet Home was Aaron Klein with games of 214, 235 and 226 for a 675 series. Grunzweig had games of 230, 193 and 215 for a 638 series. Schaefer had games of 206 and 235 for a 578 series. Other good games were rolled by Ryan Kaminski (223), Brian Barnas (219) and Dan Kaminski (209). The win earned the Panthers a spot at the Section VI Championships. Sweet Home bowls Williamsville East at Transit Lanes on Jan. 31. Williamsville South boys The South boys bowling team (6-2) defeated school rival Williamsville East Wednesday at Transit Lanes, 7-0. Russ Scheiss led all bowlers with a 702 series which is a personal and league best so far. Alex Petrie had a 682 series with games of 212, 213 and 257. Collin Ballou added a 606 set, including a 239. Adam Petrie shot a 235 and 600 set. South returns to action on Jan. 31 against West Seneca East at Wimbledon Lanes. Williamsville East boys Dan Melidona broke a school record with a 753 series. The Flames top five averages are Zach Marzo (159), Joe Lapoint (164), Dillon Ulrich (155), Melidona (204) and Zachary Miller (167). Williamsville North girls The Lady Spartans are 0-7 but coach Kevin Poplawski has been pleased with the team's performance this season. "We're been competitive in every match," said Poplawski. "We lost very close matches to Lancaster and West Seneca West." North is led by Sarah Zimmer and Jackie Vetrano, who are both averaging 20 pins higher than last year. Maureen O'Brien, Lauren Fleming, and Heather Lewandowski have all made significant contributions on "A", said Poplawski. Maggie Brass and Allison Lyttle have been very good on "B" as well, he added. |
