Mite Black Sabres edge out White Sabres

The Mite Black Sabres came out charging after a defeat and a bye to shade the White Sabres, 2-0, on Sunday.

Spencer Maranto was in net and played an outstanding game, shutting down every attempt the White Sabres managed to get past the Black Sabres defense. At one point, he caught an air born puck that came hurtling towards him. The game puck went to Maranto.

The first period saw a lot of hustle and shuffling of the puck up and down the rink, but was marked by a beautiful shot from out of nowhere by Joey Lupica that found its way straight past Brady Kyle of the White Sabres and into the net.

The Black Sabres continued with some beautiful team plays, but in particular by Dan Mosher, Nick Pieri, Lupica, Noah Bachwitz and Tyler Roberto in the Black Sabres "blue line". Time after time, Bachwitz or Roberto made great saves at the blue line and sent the puck back down to one of the other three members of their lineup only to be thwarted in the net by Kyle. Pieri, Mosher and Lupica battled valiantly to keep the puck in the scoring zone and continually made shots on goal.

Equally the "red line" kept up a strong offense, but despite great defense by Jacob Ostrowski and Zachary Gannon to keep the puck in the Black Sabre scoring zone, many shots at the net were blocked each time by Kyle.

In the third period during a "yellow line play", Elliot Whittaker managed to shoot the puck out from a pack of players to the boards, from where it gracefully slid back towards the goal and through the feet of Kyle to score the second and final goal of the game.
