'Freshman Friday' puts police on alert

(Editor's note: The Bee's police blotter is a sampling of unusual, sometimes humorous calls received by the police department. It is not intended to be a complete record of all incidents reported.)

Friday, Jan. 12

+ A man called for police assistance, stating he hit another vehicle with his vehicle in a parking lot on Niagara Falls Boulevard and was unsure which one. No damage was found on any car in the area.

+ A 30-year-old man wearing a blue puffy jacket reportedly took clippers from a Main Street store and left on foot. He was gone when police arrived.

+ A 17-year-old male student was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell at a Hopkins Road school.

+ A three-car accident was reported on Alberta Drive after a male driver accidently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

+ Police were called to South High School on Main Street for "freshman Friday" when students threw eggs at freshmen and did "other stuff" to them.

Saturday, Jan. 13

+ On Evans Street, a group of six boys and girls were reportedly drunk and running out in front of cars - playing chicken.

+ An unlocked vehicle on Kaymar Drive resulted in the larceny of an XM radio.

+ An ambulance driver reported to police that a male was driving on Sheridan Drive, while talking on the phone, with a child in the front seat and two small children unrestrained in the back seat. Two summonses were issued.

+ A suspicious man in a vehicle was reported in a parking lot on J.J. Audubon Parkway. No problem was reported. He was reading the paper before work.

Sunday, Jan. 14

+ A female on Main Street had $450 taken from her purse.

+ Police responded to Garden Parkway after a mother called stating that her intoxicated 26-year-old son was trying to drive. The dispatcher reported hearing the son talking in the background, and he was slurring his speech. The situation was calm when police arrived.

+ Three children at a Fairgreen Drive residence called 911 and passed around the phone pretending to be an adult. The mother was contacted and would deal with the children, ages 11, 14 and 15.

Monday, Jan. 15

+ On Main Street a teenage girl appeared high or drunk while walking in the road.

+ A man who was with friends at the Target Plaza on Niagara Falls Boulevard reported that he was dressed in a tiger costume just for the fun of it when a second group of teen males threw chunks of ice at him.

+ Two males in a vehicle on Spring Meadow Drive were reportedly throwing fireworks out of the vehicle. The complainant said it had been happening the past two days.

+ Police were called to a parking lot on Campbell Boulevard where a witness saw an infant in a small, black pickup truck. The bartender of a business in the area said the suspect came in for one drink and left. The suspect was gone when police arrived.

Tuesday, Jan. 16

+ A 17-year-old boy was threatening an employee with a stick on Main Street.

+ A Springville Avenue resident reported seeing a large amount of black smoke. It was just low clouds.

Wednesday, Jan. 17

+ On Coronation Drive, a suspicious man in a black coat was reportedly sitting in the middle of the street and had almost been hit by two cars.

+ Police responded to Lawrence Bell Drive where a man had been sleeping in a car for two hours and didn't respond to knocking on the window. Police reported that he was taking a nap.

+ A Main Street resident complained that rats were running into the garage. The complainant was advised to call the refuse control department.

Thursday, Jan. 18

+ A Niagara Falls Boulevard restaurant employee reported a group of 10 kids had a bottle of liquor. They left in a vehicle and police were unable to locate them.

+ Rattling sounds were reportedly coming from a Dumpster on Longmeadow Road. Police determined that the weather was causing the noises.

+ On Yale Avenue, three people were reportedly outside with guns and trying to kick in a door.
