Louis A. Zon, co-founder of Ziggy & Zon's World

Louis A. Zon, 87, of East Amherst, co-owner of Ziggy & Zon's World, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, in DeGraff Hospital, North Tonawanda.

Born in Buffalo, he started as a huckster on the streets of Black Rock at age 17. He was also a Hall's Baker deliveryman and a Prudential Insurance Co. salesman.

In the early 1940s, Mr. Zon opened Zon's Food Market in Black Rock and was the first distributor in the region to market Tropicana Orange Juice.

Mr. Zon became owner of Union Garden Center in the 1950s. He and business partner Sigmund Kucewicz later turned the center into Ziggy & Zon's World, an eclectic store that sold all kinds of items.

The Cheektowaga store in the Airport Plaza operated until 1997. The West Seneca location closed in 1993.

Mr. Zon also developed Union Village Square and Willow Creek Executive Offices in Cheektowaga.

Mr. Zon was the creator and planning developer behind "Christmas Around the World at Summit Park Mall in Wheatfield in 2005.

He also created unique concession stands at the Erie County Fair for hot dogs, juices, and strawberries.

Mr. Zon is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Lucille Watson; two daughters, Judith and Ann Marie; and a son, Louis A. Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Tuesday, Jan. 16 in St. Mary Church following prayers at in Perna-Pellegrino Funeral Home.
