Teen assaulted with hammer, suspect arrested

Amherst police officers Robert Stephens and Thomas Thielman responded to a call at 10 a.m. Monday on Fairgreen Drive where a 17-year-old male was struck in the face with a hammer.

Witnesses at the incident gave police a description of the suspect's vehicle, which was located by Stephens and Thielman on Niagara Falls Boulevard near Creekside Drive.

Charged with second degree assault with a weapon, a D-felony, was Sessione Heyward, 18, of Amherst.

Assistant Chief John Askey reported that the incident was the result of an altercation that took place the night before.

The victim suffered injuries and a laceration to his face. Information on his condition or whether he was treated at a hospital was not available prior to press time.
