Northern Hopkins Road access open to local traffic only

The Erie County Department of Highways will close Hopkins Road from Schoelles Road north to Tonawanda Creek Road, except to local two-way traffic. The speed limit in this section will be reduced to 30 mph.

The closure is expected the end of the week, weather pending.

The noted restrictions have become necessary due to the settling of the roadway embankment adjacent to Ransom Creek in several locations along the northern part of Hopkins. Consideration of a proposal that Hopkins be made one way going north through this section has been dropped.

Legislator Dr. Barry Weinstein said, "We continue to await the funding from the Army Corp of Engineers to address the underlying structural problems. At this time the County believes that closing this portion of Hopkins and permitting local traffic only is the most reasonable way to safeguard the traveling public."

Non-residents of the northern portion of Hopkins Road must plan an alternate route.
