A 'flurry' of activity
The Buffalo Museum of Science is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Blizzard of '77 when "Blizzard Weekend" is held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 27 and 28.
The celebration, the only one of its kind in WNY, is based on the museum's themed museum experience, "SNOW," running through Feb. 25.
The "Blizzard Weekend" will include various interactive family activities, winter crafts throughout the museum; a visit by Channel 2 On Your Side meteorologist Andy Parker; special snow-related activities in the museum's Connections gallery; talks on winter botany and snowmaking science at Kissing Bridge Ski Resort; music by area performing groups, including members of the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra and Friends of Harmony; winter-themed Native American and toddler storytelling; and Blizzard of '77 documentaries.
Highlighted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28 (the day the blizzard hit 30 years ago) will be "The Blizzard of '77 Remembers," a program of blizzard stories, remembrances and archival footage, in the museum auditorium. The program is included in regular museum admission, with museum members admitted free.
Speakers will include Tom Niziol, U.S. Weather Service/Buffalo Niagara International Airport; Erno Rossi, author of the definitive book on the blizzard, "White Death"; East Aurora resident Cynthia Toy and her son, Brennan, who was born during the blizzard; and other local personalities.
Following the 2 p.m. program, copies of "White Death" and a recently released Blizzard of '77 30th anniversary DVD will be available for purchase and signed by author Rossi.
A special feature of the museum's "SNOW" experience is a gallery exhibit of Blizzard of '77 collectibles and memorabilia loaned by members of the WNY community. Historic photographs and archival TV reports on the blizzard are included and guests can record their personal stories and memories of significant WNY storms.
Hours of the event are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 27 and noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 28 at 1020 Humboldt Parkway, Buffalo. Admission is $6 for seniors and $5 for children and students aged 3 and older. For more information, call 896-5200 or visit www.buffalomuseumofscience.org.
