Spirit downs Rovers, 6-2

The Kenmore Spirit defeated the Amherst Rovers, 6-2, on Saturday, in a U-12 indoor Amherst Soccer Association game.

Joy Thompson scored Amherst's first goal when she broke into the clear and beat the over committed goalie to the wide open far side.

Maria Lafornayra made it 3-2 on a breakaway she created by beating several defensemen with a hard low shot just to the far side of the goalie.

Allie Troncone beat the first Spirit opponent several times to push the ball up the field.

Courtney Sugarman was mixing it up well at midfield to help spark offensive pressure.

Kali James had a couple scoring chances including a breakaway and was a key in setting up several scoring opportunities.

Collen Stelley had an exceptional day on defense, time and time again stopping odd-man rushes as last defenseman back.

Julia Struble made several good saves in the net, including a shin save on a breakaway and another one full force from point blank range.

Jade Brooks rejected several Spirit penetration attempts at midfield and in Amherst's end.

Julia Newton broke up multiple Kemmore rushes before they could get within scoring range.

Emily Saint harassed Kenmore attackers all game, not letting them shoot or move into position in front of the net.

Chelsea Stachura saved a breakaway by knocking the ball away and was otherwise mixing it up well with Kenmore attackers.

Sarah Snyder blocked two shots and ran down a girl from behind to prevent a breakaway.

It looked like it might be a very long day for Amherst after Kenmore scored just 30 seconds into the game. But Amherst came right back to tie it and went into halftime down just 3-2.

They looked like they might come back and win it as they dominated the first five minutes of the second half, but Kenmore's fourth goal seemed to take the air out their sails.
