Stars defeat Red Wings, 5-4

The Mite Stars beat the Red Wings, 5-4 in a wild ride at the Amherst Pepsi Center on Jan. 7.

The Stars opened the scoring on their second shift. Nick Kieffer found himself in the slot after a Michael Callesto shot was stopped by Wings goalie Robert Marshall. Kieffer went top shelf with a wrist shot, beating Marshall on his glove side.

The Wings answered back with two of their own goals at the end of the first. Connor Wagner got behind the Stars' defense and went in alone on goalie Logan Gare. Gare stood tough, but Wagner beat him low with a beautiful deke. On the next shift, Ryan O'Donnell scored after a traffic jam in front of the Stars' net.

The second period, however, belonged to the Stars as they scored four unanswered goals. At the start of the period, Jacob Siegel took a wrist shot from his defensive spot at the top of the faceoff circle, beating Marshall to the stick side. Max Ferro then found the net and converted on another Michael Callesto pass to put the Stars back in the lead. The following shift, Matt Schralu took the puck from his defensive post at the blue line, carried it up to the goal and slid it past Marshall. Ferro capped off the Stars' scoring with

35 seconds left in the period by taking a pass from Michael Gagliano and sending it into the net.

During the third period, the Red Wings answered with two quick goals, the first by John Falvey, the next one minute later by Wagner.

The Stars battled fiercely to keep the puck in the Red Wing zone and hung on to win the game in a very exciting contest.
