Mite Majors 'AAA' win at Top Gun Tournament

The Amherst Mite Majors won its second game of the Top Gun Tournament, defeating last year's Top Gun champion, Stoney Creek Warriors, 7-2, on Saturday.

The scoring started in the first period with Amherst's Tyler Eldridge assisting on Caelan Briere's goal at the 7:02 mark. Amherst's Liam Bailey scored four minutes later with Derek Westbrook making a nice pass. Michael Steffan buried a Tyler Lawrence pass to finish the first period scoring.

The Stoney Creek Warriors came out flying in the second period with heavy pressure in the Amherst zone. A penalty shot was awarded to the Warriors after an Amherst player had covered the puck in their crease.

Stoney Creek's Jacob Buch scored over the shoulder of Amherst's Tyler Johnson. Amherst fired right back off the faceoff with Briere scoring his second of the day unassisted seven seconds later.

Amherst was not finished as Zac Kozlin scored from a nice pass from Briere. Michael Bliss from Amherst scored with two minutes left in the second, assisted by Steffan.

The Warriors came back at 6:33 mark of the third with Ty McCullough scoring on a Noah Ferko pass. Bliss recorded his second goal of the day off a Tyler Durfee pass to close the scoring. Durfee was named game MVP for Amherst.

Amherst's strong defense was led by James Panzarella, Joey Mostowy, Eldridge, Jon Tucker, Lawrence and Alex Randaccio. Johnson was solid in net, making 16 saves to secure the win.

Mite Minor 'AAA' 3, Wheatfield Blades 0

Amherst started the Top Gun Tournament with a 3-0 shutout over the Wheatfield Blades.

The scoring started in the second period. Amherst's Chris Berger recorded a power-play goal from Derek Westbrook and Liam Bailey. Michael Stephan scored less than two minutes later from a Michael Bliss pass.

Amherst's Tyler Durfee appeared to score a goal in the second but was disallowed for a crease violation.

Michael Bliss finished the scoring in the third, assisted by Berger and Jonathan (JT) Tucker.

Amherst's defense, led by Tyler Eldridge, Tucker, James Panzarella, Joey Mostowy, Alex Randaccio, and Tyler Lawrence, had a strong game, limiting shots against to only eight.

Wheatfield goalie Connor Adamczyk had a very good game, stopping many point blank shots and was awarded MVP while Derek Westbrook was named MVP for Amherst.

Mite Major 'AAA' 2, Oakville Rangers 1

Amherst won a close game against the Oakville Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

The first period was a strong defensive effort by both teams with shots limited to three each.

Oakville's Will MacQueen started the scoring at 11:16 of the second from Domenico Commisso. Amherst battled back with Derek Westbrook scoring a power-play goal at 8:19 from a Chris Berger pass.

Amherst scored again full strength at 3:12 left in the second when Berger tallied, assisted by Michael Bliss and Jonathan (JT) Tucker.

Amherst goalie Tyler Johnson was stellar in goal, stopping all 11 third period chances.
