125 Years Ago

Jan. 19, 1882

A week ago last Tuesday evening, Jan. 10th, a bridal party drove up to the Lutheran parsonage, and Miss Dena Schworm and John Hardinger were made one. After which, a reception was held at the house of the bride's father. May happiness and joy attend the newly married couple.

Mr. Christian Long reached his eighty-seventh birthday Tuesday. Mrs. Daniel Reist, daughter of Mr. Long, invited her father, brother and sisters to spend the day in honor of the event at her residence. Mr. Long is hale and hearty for his age and has the promise of many more pleasant birthdays.

E.V. Rogers, salesman for the Osgoodsby Safe Co., placed a 1,400-pound safe into the Williamsville Post Office last Saturday.

Mrs. Caroline Carey, the oldest woman in Buffalo, died Saturday, aged 104 years.

The care of cow stables in winter should be closely watched. No filth should be allowed to remain for even an hour.

George W. Hoover was elected president of the Erie and Niagara County Farmer's Association. The membership approved a motion that steam power be allowed for threshing by using coal as fuel.

"A lady, when admiring the stars one bright night, was asked in the most innocent way by her little son, if those were the nails that held up heaven."

Jan. 17, 1907

Harry Bowen and his staff of officers were installed by the Williamsville Lodge, International Order of Odd Fellows, followed by a banquet at the Eagle House with James Chalmers acting as toastmaster.

Amherst Tent, Knights of the Maccabees, is making an extra effort to increase its membership.

75 Years Ago

Jan. 21, 1932

Granting a personal audience to Supervisor Alfred F. Beiter last Thursday, Governor Franklin Roosevelt came to a fuller understanding of Amherst's problems and needs. The conference took place at the governor's mansion and covered forty minutes.

One of the best essays on "temperance", entered in the state Women's Christian Temperance Union contest, was written by Daniel Bosworth, a student at the Williamsville High School.

A gala party is planned by the Women's Association of Amherst Community Church for Friday evening, February 5, at 8 o'clock. It will be a hard time, old-fashioned costume party with entertainment, dancing, cards, grand march, Virginia reel and stunts. Admission will be 50 cents for adults and 35 cents for children.

Christian E. Smith has been elected president of the North Amherst Chemical Company. Frank L. Wolf is the chief.

Jan. 17, 1957

A fire on Monday afternoon destroyed the garage of the Williams Bus Co., 333 North Ellicott Creek Road. Firemen from Ellicott Creek, North Amherst, North Bailey and Eggertsville worked for about five hours in the bitter cold to fight the fire.

Gail Maurer, a sophomore at Williamsville Central High School, has taken over the position of president on the Berger's Teenage Fashion Board.

Smith's General Store and Tavern, until recently the site of the Swormville Post Office, has begun an exterior and interior modernization program.

Jan. 13, 1982

Amherst is recovering from the season's first severe storm, which struck Sunday night with almost the same fury as the Blizzard of '77.

Daemen College has made an offer to the Amherst Central School District to lease the gymnasium of the Harlem Road School next year.

Martin H. Fisher has been elected president of the Brookfield Country Club.
