Micron Gold Sabres defeat Red Sabres, 7-4 The Micron Gold Sabres took on the mighty Red Sabres in a Christmas Eve contest on the Amherst Pepsi Center’s Olympic Rink. The Gold Sabres’ overall team play led them to a 7-4 victory. The Red Sabres came out strong and took an early lead in the game. Red Sabre Jeffrey Cummins put his team on the board with a nice wrist shot that hit the back of the Gold Sabres’ net. The Red Sabres took a 2-0 lead early on the next shift when Adam Pohrte earned a tally of his own. Gold Sabre Anthony Trigilio quickly recovered and was stellar in net as he faced heavy pressure from a talented Red Sabre squad. In a single shift, Trigilio successfully stonewalled attacks by Red Sabre sharpshooters Cameron Briere and Matthew Barbolini. Gold Sabre Paul Cartone then showcased his powerful shot. From deep within the corner of the Red Sabre zone, he scored on a shot that came in from the side. John Courtney hustled to score for the Gold Sabres on a breakaway to tie the game at 2-2. Red goalie Roman Jewula was impressive as he used stick and pads to stop several Gold Sabre scoring chances throughout the first period. However, a shot by Ray Faran earned the Gold Sabres’ go-ahead goal to give them a 3-2 lead at the close of the first period. In the second period, Christmas came early for Gold Sabre Alex Pronobis as he earned his first goal of the season after firing a shot deep into the Red Sabre net. Less than one minute later, Cummins passed to linemate Michael Floccare who earned a goal off an impressive backhanded shot that he lifted high in the Gold Sabre net. The Gold Sabre line of Jake Wehr, Elisabeth Sidorski and Faran faced off against the strong Red trio of Barbolini, Briere, and Griffin Green. Wehr’s play was particularly exceptional throughout the game. Wehr scored the Gold Sabres’ fifth goal of the game and teamed with Sidorski on defense to shut down the Red Sabres’ offense. Sidorski stood just inches away from her own net as she fired a strong shot that went coast to coast through the five-hole to earn another Gold Sabre tally. Two minutes later, Ben Weppner rang a shot into the Gold Sabre net to earn the Red Sabres’ fourth goal of the contest. With 26 seconds remaining, Paul Cartone, Victoria Pitman, Michael Kaplan, and Thomas Peers were involved in a scrum in front of the Red Sabre net. At the end of the battle for the puck, Peers was awarded the Gold Sabres’ seventh goal. Gold Sabres Alex Dane and Ryan Curtin and Red Sabres Rian Bisson and John Weppner each made some strong plays that contributed to the excitement of the game. |
