Christmas tree recycling set, mulch to be available

The Village of Williamsville is accepting Christmas Trees for the next two weeks at the auxiliary Department of Public Works on S. Long Street next to Lehigh Memory Trail and the Train Depot.

The trees will be ground and made into mulch, and residents can take it for their gardens.

Village officials said pine tree mulch is useful on acidic plantings such as holly, azaleas, rhododendrons and some hydrangeas. It raises the acid level in the soil for the mentioned plants and helps them thrive while protecting them from freezing temperatures during the winter months.

Residents can also leave trees at the curb for regular garbage pickup on the weekly schedule.

The garbage is burned at the Niagara Falls plant and becomes energy.

The Town of Amherst residents will be able to drop off their trees at the compost facility, located at 560 Smith Road.

The Town will also pick up Christmas trees until the third week of January.
