Sweet Home defeats East, clinch Class A North crown
      Sweet Home's 27-16 road win over Williamsville East on Saturday not only improved its record to 7-0, it also clinched the Panthers the Class A North title and a Federation playoff berth. East girls tennis dominates ECIC doubles
      Williamsville East was a triple threat at last week's ECIC doubles Tournament last Friday and Saturday at the Village Glen Tennis Club. Sophomore Miranda Podlas and senior Monica Vieth, East's second and third singles players all season, combined to win the doubles tournament.

      Williamsville North had many positives they could take out of its football game at Niagara Falls last Friday night. The Spartans caused four turnovers, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, and recorded 284 yards of total offense.

Another easy win for Mesi
      Town of Tonawanda heavyweight "Baby" Joe Mesi added the name Shannon Miller to his list of first-round knockout opponents Saturday. Mesi (36-0, 29 knockouts) floored Miller (15-4, nine knockouts) with nine seconds left in the first round of their main-event bout at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.

Albion spoils South's homecoming
      The scoreboard read Albion 32, Williamsville South 6 but Billies coach Kraig Kurzanski felt last Saturday's homecoming game was the best his team had played in a month. "We dominated the first quarter," said Kurzanski. "We made them fumble in the backfield on their first play (recovered at Albion 21 by Josh Burke) but we turned the ball over on downs.

Turnovers cost Amherst football an upset
      Early on last Friday night, it looked like the underdog Amherst Tigers were going to spoil Iroquois' homecoming. Instead, it was Amherst's own mistakes which cost them the upset bid. Amherst junior quarterback Joe Kubek threw two interceptions that were returned for Iroquois touchdowns as the Chiefs outscored the Tigers, 22-0, in the second quarter to win 49-28.

Lady Flames win sixth straight ECIC II title, 36th straight divisional game
      Williamsville East's dominance over ECIC Division II competition continues. The Lady Flames defeated Iroquois, 5-2, on Monday to win the ECIC II crown for the sixth straight year. It was East's 36th consecutive league win and 47th league victory out of 48 games. East's last lost in ECIC II was a 2-1 defeat to Hamburg in the 2004 regular season finale.

South works overtime to beat WS East
      Williamsville South and West Seneca East sure don't like to finish girls soccer games in regulation. For the third straight time, a meeting between both teams had to go to overtime. South defeated West Seneca East, 4-2, in double overtime on Oct. 5. South won 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 19.

CCA posts 8-6-2 record
      Christian Central Academy's varsity girls soccer team is 8-6-2 after six weeks of the regular season. CCA lost a close contest against Roy-Hart, 1-0, and beat arch-rival, West Seneca Christian, 7-5, in double overtime. In the Roy-Hart game, both teams played evenly throughout but Roy-Hart's Brittany Cooper scored the lone goal of the game.

     CLOSE RALLY - St. Benedict's JV baseball team lost in the finals of the North Town National League, 10-8, to St. Christopher's. The Tigers jumped out to a 4-1 lead on a P.J. Anders' triple and Patrick MacDonald's three-run home run. St. Christopher's took a 10-5 lead heading into the last inning, but a furious St. Benedict's rally, led by triples from Paul Battaglia and Vince Gregory, cut the deficit to 10-8 and put the tying runs on base. However, St. Christopher's retired the next three batters to close out the game. The Tigers finished 8-1 and shared the regular-season championship. Members of the team, pictured from left, are: first row - Will Boerema, Vincent Gregory, Julia Blujus, Devon Florczak, John O'Rourke and Joey Wittmann; second row - coach Mike MacDonald, P.J. Flames tie North, beat Iroquois for ECIC II title
      Entering the second to last week of the regular season proved to be a big week for Williamsville East's boys soccer team. In a non-league game last Tuesday against Williamsville North, the teams played to a 0-0 tie. "Neither team had any good scoring opportunities," said East coach Ron Schumacher. "The first half play was pretty equal.

Panthers continue to struggle
      There certainly is a huge gap between strong and weak teams in ECIC Division I boys soccer this season. So much so that if Sweet Home, 3-8 in league play and 3-14 overall beat West Seneca West on Tuesday, there's a chance the Panthers could host a playoff game next week, said Panthers coach Scott Martin.

Registration deadline for ASA indoor league approaching
      The Oct. 22 registration deadline for the Amherst Soccer Association indoor soccer league is rapidly approaching. Leagues are available for children in age groups U8 to 14. Some of the older age groups may be coed. Games are played on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. All games are one hour and are played five-on-five, including goalkeepers.

South, Amherst can't capitalize on scoring chances
      If the Amherst and Williamsville South boys soccer teams scored more goals, each would have had better records heading into their final league game on Tuesday. That's kind of an obvious statement to make but judging by the comments from Amherst coach Bobby DiNunzio and South coach Peter Sugg, it's been each team's Achilles heel this season.

Undefeated North ties East, wins ECIC Division I
      Williamsville North's boys soccer team continued its unbeaten ways this past week. Last Tuesday, the Spartans squared off against Williamsville East. North was ranked No. 1 for Western New York large schools while East was ranked No. 2.

North girls volleyball falters in tournament final
      In a season where many matches have not gone Williamsville North's way, this past Saturday's Amherst Tournament at Amherst High School provided the Lady Spartans with some positives. North went 5-1 in pool play and beat host team Amherst, 28-26, 23-25, 15-11 in the semifinals before losing to West Seneca East, 11-25, 25-20, 17-25, in the finals.

Sports brief
      Ashley and Amanda Kotz, both Williamsville East High School graduates, helped the St. Bonaventure softball team earned the highest cumulative team grade point average in the nation for Division I softball in 2006-07. It is the second straight year the Bonnies' softball team earned the honor. The team's GPA is 3.622.

North boys defeat Orchard Park, lose to Clarence
      Williamsville North's boys cross country team split an ECIC Division I meet last Tuesday with Orchard Park and Clarence. The Spartans defeated Orchard Park, 22-33, and lost to Clarence, 21-38. The meet was hosted by Orchard Park on their 5,000-meter home course.

East's McDonald shatters course record
      It was a tough day for Williamsville East's boys and girls cross country teams last Tuesday, losing to both Lake Shore and Iroquois. However, there was one bright highlight that may last for a long time. Senior team captain Andy Mc- Donald won the overall boys race in 17:10, shattering the 11-year old East home course record of 17:36 by an amazing 26 seconds.

      Williamsville South's cross country teams finished up an impressive week, even though they didn't register any wins. Last Tuesday, the South girls' team lost to fourth-ranked Starpoint, 27-30, and to ninth-ranked Amherst, 27-28.

Sweet Home volleyball loses to Lake Shore, rebounds at tourney
      The Sweet Home girls volleyball team's first blemish in ECIC Division II this season came against a familiar rival. Sweet Home dropped into a first place tie with Lake Shore after losing 15-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-8, last Thursday. Both teams are 10-1.

Licata breaks through for first win
      Victoria Licata of Getzville took a difficult path, but emerged unscathed from the Bear's Challenge Tournament Saturday at the Fencing Center of Buffalo. Licata went 4-1 in her pool to earn the fourth seed in the double elimination open foil tournament and ousted the top two seeds to capture her first individual gold medal.

East girls swimming improves record to 7-0
      Williamsville East's girls swimming team improved to 7-0 with road wins over Clarence, 97-88 and Amherst, 63-31, last Tuesday and Friday. The Clarence meet came down to the last event, the 400 freestyle relay. Trailing 86-85, seniors Janelle Munroe and Tori Mayer, junior Britany O'Dea and sophomore Bailey Woodling joined forces to win the event in 3:48.

Lady Tigers swimmers win two, lose one
      The Amherst girls swimming team had a busy week, swimming three meets in four days. The first meet was a 63-39 win at Pioneer last Wednesday. "We won nine events and had some personal-best swims, which is great for this time in the season," said Amherst coach Kim Skomra.

SS. Peter and Paul posts division win
      SS. Peter and Paul's swim team defeated St. Mary's of Lancaster, 147-98 on Sunday, Oct. 14 at Sweet Home High School. The 11 and up division was led by Rachel Kuechle with two first place wins. Adding points with second and third places were Maury Fields, Kathleen Ruggiero, Rachel Nasca, Ally Costanza and Samantha Basile.

      The St. Gregory the Great swim team added a 188-61 victory over St. Mark's to remain undefeated in the Newman Catholic Swim League. Anna Rubino broke the girls 9-10 50 freestyle record in 29.66.

      The Williamsville Jr. Freshman Air Force team moved to 6-0 with a 24-7 victory on Saturday over the Grand Island Vikings. Quarterback Ryan Foster led the scoring with a 50-yard pass to running back Nick Maranto and a 60-yard pass to running back Ryan Conschafter.

      The Williamsville South modified football team is off to its best start in recent history. Coaches Chris Heximer and Chris Murphy have coached the Billies to a 3-0 record with a hard-fought 6-0 win over Hamburg. After a scoreless first quarter, quarterback Jared Shatkin moved the football down field with key passes to Peter Giancarlo, Paul Blasio and Billy Jacobbi.
