When Amherst hits the pool this fall, they'll be a pioneer of sorts. That's because the Lady Tigers are one of the first girls swimming teams in the area to include total immersion into its training. Sweet Home Gymnastics Club has returned and has increased numbers for the school's girls gymnastics program. Lady Panthers coach Dianne Weinert originally started the program 30 years ago as a way for middle school students to sign up for the team. The program was conducted during evenings. More ... Williamsville North finished seventh in team scoring at last year's Section VI Championships, its highest finish in years. And with only three seniors graduated, the Lady Spartans are ready to improve on their 4-2 divisional record with several returning gymnasts. More ... No longer will Amherst have to forfeit points because of a lack of gymnasts. This year's Lady Tigers' roster has 11 girls, six more than last year's team. "I'll have six girls per event where last year, I would have only two or three because I didn't have the numbers," said Amherst coach Marcy Reynard. Any high school cross country coach will say their team is as good as their fifth runner. Finding a starting fifth runner is a dilemma that North boys coach Greg Stang faces this season. Williamsville North's varsity girls and boys cross country teams ran exceptionally well at the 18th Franklinville Classic on Saturday, said North coach Greg Stang. The Williamsville South cross country teams continued their improvement by competing at the 13th West Seneca Invitational on Saturday. The South girls' team finished an impressive fifth out of 10 teams in the large school girls' race. Amherst Central's best girls cross-county runner from 2006 is back for her sophomore year. Due to a large number of requests, Amherst Youth Basketball is adding third graders to the league to form a third and fourth grade level in the boys and girls divisions. Any football coach will say games are won or lost on the offensive and defensive line. If that's the case, then Amherst shouldn't have gotten on the bus to travel to Cheektowaga last Friday. Cheektowaga absolutely dominated Amherst from opening snap to the final whistle with a convincing 22-0 victory. Amherst is 0-3. More ... Sweet Home is 3-0, but it took some luck to stay undefeated. Tied at 21-21 at Starpoint last Saturday, Sweet Home coach John Faller told his team to go for a first down on a fourth-and-one from their own 10-yard line, instead of punting. The play, a run to back Marcus Johnson, was stuffed by the Starpoint defense. More ... Williamsville North coach Mike Mammoliti summed up his team's 28-7 home loss to Kenmore West last Saturday as a game of missed opportunities. Mammoliti cited several examples of places where his team faltered. More ... Williamsville South field hockey improved its record to 3-1-1 with victories over Eden and East Aurora. South beat Eden, 6-0, on Monday, Sept. 10. Sarah Hunt and Lauren Falzone led the Lady Billies with two goals apiece. Ashley Ferenczy and Shannon Martin added the other goals for South. More ... Williamsville East coach Chris Durr didn't think his girls soccer team would be 4-0-1 through five games, but he's not complaining. "At this point, I would have been happy with playing well and competing," said Durr. "They've far exceeded my expectations. The kids are playing together and with a lot of confidence. Williamsville North's boys soccer team opened ECIC Division I league play last week with shutout victories. Sweet Home's varsity boys soccer team is no longer without a victory. The Panthers beat Lake Shore, 6-2, last Friday. Nick Cavalieri and Johnny Reeb led the scoring with three and two goals, respectively. Matt Cuddihy finished off the scoring by driving a header to the back post off of a corner. In its second week of play, the Christian Central Academy varsity girls soccer team (4-2) beat Barker, 4-1, and O'Hara, 5-4, and lost to Depew, 8-0. CCA's goals were spread out against Barker with four different players scoring. Junior Megan Salzman scored first with a nice assist from eighth grader Rachel Cook. Of the three players from Amherst inducted into the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame, two, Dr. Charley Weber and Richie Fink, once played on the same team and also were opponents. Weber was a regular on the late Charley Arbogast's Mustangs team in 1972 and again in 1978. More ... The UB Amherst Swim Club has hired assistant coaches Bryan Fadel, Ginger Miller and Laura Powalski to its competitive team. Bryan Fadel Fadel started swimming competitively at the age of 6 with the Northeast YMCA Sharks and went on to swim with the Cheektowaga Stingrays before joining UBAM in 1998. More ... But that will be the case on New Year's Day when the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins battle in an outdoor game at Ralph Wilson Stadium - the first such event to be held in the United States. Buffalo's new and expensive offensive line of Jason Peters, Derrick Dockery, Melvin Fowler, Brad Butler and Langston Walker has been up and down through losses to the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers. In a rematch of their 2006 Turlecky Cup championship game, the Williamsville Jr. Freshman Air Force football team began their defense of the cup with a 22-7 victory over the Williamsville Jr. Freshman Commandos.
