PollWhen Amherst Central hired Patrick Murphy as its new head varsity football coach six months ago, the program immediately saw improvements. The first item of business Murphy introduced was a college style strength and conditioning program. The next item was bring in more athletes, which Murphy was able to easily do from his days as a college recruiter. More ... Team New Era 12U won the Battle of the Falls Tournament held at the end of July in Lockport, N.Y. It was the team's third tournament victory of the season. Offensive firepower and a stingy defense led undefeated Team New Era to outscore their opponents, 48-10. More ... The 2007 high school football season marks a dubious anniversary: Ten years ago, I was beginning my senior year of high school football at Depew. I can't believe it's been 10 years. More ... Sweet Home has seen its share of success on the gridiron the past couple of years but in Section VI Class A title games, the team has fallen short. Two years ago at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the Panthers lost to Grand Island, 20-14. Last year, Sweet Home fell to Iroquois, 53-20. The Lou Gehrig 12-year old Red team earned the Cal Ripken Western District and Western New York State Championship titles in recent competition. In the districts at Lancaster's Westwood Park, the team went 3-0. Canandaigua was the host for the New York State tournament, in which the team went undefeated again to advance to the Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Bridgewater, N.J. More ... St. Pius X Padres hosted and defeated St. Mary's of Lancaster, 5-4, to win the Catholic Youth Organization championship softball game on Aug. 21. The Padres took an early 3-0, lead but St. Mary's of Lancaster answered with strong defensive plays and an awakening offense. Buffalo In-line Hockey Group's David Campuzano has been selected to play for Team New York in the August State Wars tournament. State Wars is governed by the United States Roller Hockey Commission and is a competitive geographically structured national in-line hockey event with players who are considered to be the elite from each state in their respective age divisions. More ... FEELING GREEN - Trish Kennery of the Green Machine launches a pitch during the fifth annual StrikeOut Cancer Tournament held last weekend at the Amherst Pepsi Center. The Green Machine was made up of softball players from Williamsville North. The Green Machine lost 3-0 in the semifinals of the 16u bracket to eventual tournament winners, the Rochester Lady Lions.
