Low-flying helicopter causes concern
(Editors note: The Bee's police blotter is a sampling of unusual, sometimes humorous calls received by the police department. It is not intended to be a complete record of all incidents reported.) Friday, June 8 + Two teens were reportedly pulling a wall apart on Eggert Road near a passerby. Upon patrol arrival, the officers were unsure if the two teens had done the damage or if it was old. Names were taken just in case. + A man was reported hiding behind a soda machine and asking customers for a ride at a Millersport Highway business. The complainant was a customer who was concerned about the clerk working alone in the business. The suspect was given a ride to Niagara County. + A Shellridge Drive resident reported that his neighbor's children kept coming onto his property and putting plastic lawn chairs into the pool under the solar cover. No damage was done, but he wanted the youths advised. + A Willow Ridge Drive resident said that a neighbor was playing golf in the field behind a school and was shooting directly at the complainant's house even though there is a sign on the lot that says "No Golf." Saturday, June 9 + A house on Emerson Drive was broken into and $20,000 was taken. The drawers were pulled out, and belongings were thrown all over the house. The complainant said it happened sometime while he was out during the day. No signs of forced entry could be found, but the door may not have been locked. + An Earldom Drive resident reported that her neighbor threw shrubs in the middle of the street. The neighbor said she was waiting for the landscaper to return. + A Glen Avenue resident told police that there were two people taking pictures on the property and that they might be naked. The suspects were fully clothed professional photographers and not on the property. + A Callodine Avenue resident reported a three-legged German shepherd in front of the caller's residence. Sunday, June 10 + A Marine Drive woman said she was conversing with a 12-year-old male when he ran into her house and took her purse. Monday, June 11 + A Cadman Drive complainant reported a boy and girl lying in the middle of the street, not moving for traffic. The caller said they were both wearing dark clothing and he almost hit them the previous night. + A man jumped into the middle of Niagara Falls Boulevard and crouched down and started pointing at cars that were passing him, pretending he had a gun. He could not be located upon patrol arrival. Tuesday, June 12 + A Callodine Avenue resident said his lawnmower was taken by his former landlord. The landlord said the complainant had thrown the lawnmower out before moving. + A passing boater saw a vehicle on Campbell Boulevard shining a light into the water. The complainant thought it was a patrol car, but the Niagara County Sheriff's Department hadn't had any cars in the area. Wednesday, June 13 + Youths were throwing items at officers who were interviewing witnesses at a robbery scene on Sheridan Drive. The car carrying the youths then passed a red light, almost causing a collision. They were apprehended farther down the road and given summonses. + A "flaming poop bag" was left on a front porch at McIntosh Place. + A skunk reportedly took up residence under a Brooklane Drive resident's porch. Thursday, June 14 + A Campus Drive resident reported that all of her jewelry was missing but that she was aware of its whereabouts the previous Thursday. + A Sunshine Drive complainant reported that five youths, one who was carrying a gun, were assembling. Another caller reported that there were now 15 youths all threatening to shoot each other. A third caller reported that the youths were now fighting. + A complainant was leaving a bank on Millersport Highway when a man tried to grab his wallet. The suspect did not succeed and ran away. + An extremely low-flying helicopter was reported at a golf course on Transit Road. Callers told police that it seemed to be in distress. The Sheriff's Department and State Police were contacted but had no record of helicopters in the area. The occupants of the helicopter were taking pictures and surveys of golf courses. |
