Board members leave work session
DOT addresses Niagara Falls Boulevard concerns
      There may have been a full agenda for Monday's Town Board work session, but there wasn't a full board. (See editorial on page four) Supervisor Satish Mohan was absent, due to personal business, and Deputy Supervisor Roy Wixson took his place. Calling the meeting to order, the board wasn't able to address the first item on the agenda until 10 minutes later.

Town pays $80,000 for late taxes
      A check for $83,758.61 has been sent to the IRS for Amherst's overdue taxes, and penalties, a mistake that still can't be explained. Comptroller Frank Belliotti said he sent the amount because the IRS had threatened to put a hold on the town's bank account to get the money. He said the town will request a refund for a large portion of the money.

Village candidates named
      The ballot is set for the Village of Williamsville election. The Harmony Party has endorsed Brian Geary for mayor; Jeffrey Kingsley and David Lipinoga for trustee; and Jeffrey Voelkl for justice. The Village Vision Party has endorsed Mary Lowther for mayor; Richard Sweeney and Brian Kulpa for trustee; and Voelkl for justice.

Assessor's office procedures examined
      Questions from town resident Ron Nowak about Amherst's assessment procedure had board members questioning it themselves. Nowak wrote to the Town Board about what he called unfair assessments, lack of documentation and unexplained assessments.

      Relocating every two years as part of a military family gave Sacred Heart Academy senior Jessica Lauer a subtle edge in a national essay contest. Jessica won honorable mention in the 11th-and-12th-grade category of the contest sponsored by the Armed Services YMCA.

Erie County
O'Loughlin withdraws from executive race, endorsed for clerk
      The November 2007 Erie County election ballot has already changed. Amherst Council Member William A. O'Loughlin Jr. has withdrawn from the race for county executive and will support Chris Collins as the Republican candidate. O'Loughlin had announced his candidacy in December 2006 and officially stepped down last week.

Board to explore leasing mill buildings
      The Williamsville Village Board wants to lease both the Williamsville Water Mill and the adjacent white building. At Monday night's meeting, the board entered into an agreement with the Williamsville Business and Professional Association to hold a farmer's market at the mill each Saturday from June through October.
