Investigation into police department begins
Justice Department to review hiring
      Only a small portion of the Town of Amherst's employees are considered minorities, a statistic that Council Member Dan Ward said he wants addressed. (See editorial on page four) The first department being reviewed is the police department, by the U.S. Justice Department, which will investigate the police department's hiring practices.

Geary replaced as deputy mayor
      Williamsville Mayor Mary Lowther has appointed Trustee Richard Sweeney as the new deputy mayor, replacing Trustee Brian Geary who last week announced his intention to run for mayor. The appointment came at the board's meeting on Monday night. "I was approached by her before the work session and was told that there would be consequences to my running against her (for mayor)," Geary said.

Former Amherst valedictorian named Sudoku world champ
      Do you Sudoku? Thomas Snyder does, better than anyone else in the world. The 1998 valedictorian for Amherst High School was named the World Sudoku Champion on April 1 in the Czech Republic, beating a field of more than 30 international teams. "It was a relief to have won.

Williamsville has adopted a new solid waste law requiring all property owners to use refuse totes for the storage and collection of garbage. Delivery of the totes to village residents will begin the week of April 16. Each tote will contain a serial number corresponding to the resident's property along with literature about garbage pickup. The Amherst Central School Board of Education formally accepted the resignation for retirement effective July 1 of Superintendent Dennis Ford at the April 3 meeting. The resignation of Ford, superintendent for the past 11 years, was not a surprise since the board three weeks earlier had chosen Laura Chabe, Westfield Academy and Central Schools superintendent, to succeed Ford.
