More ... It was a record-setting New York State Championship meet for Sweet Home powerlifters. Four school records fell at the 37th annual event held at Sweet Home High School. Andrew Hopkins, Nick Christman, and Matt Lycett all broke school records. Hopkins broke a 23-year old record in the 220-pound division, bench pressing 320 pounds. More ... Williamsville North is reaping the benefits of another successful hockey season. Senior Ryan Geary and sophomore Nick Fronczak were named to the New York Division I all-New York State team. Geary earned first team honors for the second straight year. Fronczak was honorable mention. More ... In a closely fought contest, the Mite Black Sabres edged the White Sabres 3-1 on Sunday. The win places the Black Sabres in the semifinals. The goaltending was outstanding from both sides. Black Sabre Jacob Ostrowski saved eight shots while White Sabre Dallas Brown made 11 saves. More ... The Mite Stars wrapped up the 2007 playoffs with a 3-0 win on Sunday over the Red Wings, capping a stellar postseason where they tied the Black Sabres with a league-high 10 points (4-0-2). The game was a tightly fought battle, with defense and goaltending as the main differences. More ... The Mite Bruins played a very entertaining hockey game against the Mite Red Sabres on Sunday, clinching the final playoff spot with a 6-4 victory. The Red Sabres, trying to play spoiler, were up two goals early in the second period. The Red Sabres' line of Adam Smolka, Tim Finley, Joe Meosky, Nolan Deakin and Greg Koutsomitis started the scoring late in the first period. More ... The Micron Red Sabres kept rolling with consecutive wins in the playoffs, putting their playoff record at 3-0. The two wins over the weekend (3-2 over White Sabres, 5-3 over Black Sabres) fortified their chances of continuing the postseason. Black and Blue and pucks all over was the theme of Saturday's playoff game between the Black Sabres and Blue Sabres. This rivalry has been heating up all year and came down to this critical elimination match. The Black Sabres took the victory with a 7-4 final score. More ... The Micron Gray Sabres came ready to play the Gold Sabres on Friday, winning 6-1. Alec Cicero netted the first two goals of the game on his way to a hat trick. Sean Macleay (two goals) and Lorenzo Zendano (goal) used their speed to help pad the Gray Sabre lead. More ... Mitch Yoder picked the right time to have his best game of the year. With the Pee Wee Flyers in a must win situation entering Sunday evening's game, Yoder and the rest of the Flyers responded by upending a strong Red Wings team, 5-3. The win advances the Flyers to the semifinals on Wednesday night. More ... Terrell Rankin will close out his high school basketball career playing with the best New York State has to offer. The Sweet Home senior was chosen to compete in the Basketball Coaches Association of New York all-star game on March 24 at Briarcliff High School in Westchester County, just north of New York City. The 5-foot-5 junior guard became the second girl and sixth overall player in Christian Central Academy history to score over 1,000 career points. Despite several players missing from last year's roster, the Bud Bakewell Bruins Pee Wee Major, an underdog all season, was a win away from qualifying for nationals. The North Buffalo Pee Wee Major Bisons capped off a successful 2006-07 season by defeating the Tonawanda Thunder, 5-0, and winning the 15th annual Tonawanda Tournament last Sunday at Brighton Arena. The week-long tournament began last week for the Bisons as they settled for a 1-1 tie against Tonawanda then defeated Grand Niagara, 3-1. More ... The Squirt Rangers continued its playoff run on Sunday evening with a 3-2 victory over the Red Sabres. The Red Sabres came out flying at the outset as Nick Molnar had to stop Adam Tucker on a breakaway just a minute into the first period. The Red Sabres continued to pressure the Rangers in their own end but Molnar repeatedly shut the door with spectacular saves. More ... The Squirt Stars entered their fifth playoff game knowing they had to win and would need help from other teams to continue into the semifinals. They upheld their end of the bargain, exploding for a season-high number of goals in dispatching the Bruins, 8-1, on Sunday. More ... The Squirt Bruins played as a well-oiled machine on March 11 in a fearsome defensive battle with the White Sabres. The Bruins won 1-0. The game was played with intensity and determination by both teams. At 10:25 of the first period, Stevie Vukelic passed to Tommy Heyden who sent a pass to Frankie Bodami, who positioned himself to force the puck past White Sabres goalie Alex Jackson. More ... The Squirt Flyers continued its winning steak after a 3-1 playoff win on Saturday over the Sharks at the Pepsi Center. The Sharks lit up the scoreboard in the first ten seconds of the game, and held their lead for the next six minutes with tough defense. More ... In a tough game, the Pee Wee White Sabres beat the Boston Bruins, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. The playoffs have been amazingly tight this season, and this matchup was an excellent example. The scoring started for the White Sabres early in the first period when Adam Russell, from Max Fenter and Angelo Caruso, tapped in the puck. More ... For only one day, Sweet Home High School will be "Keeper of the Kohn." Louisville avenged a 35-34 first round playoff loss a week ago against Seton Hall with a 24-17 victory in Amherst Youth Basketball's "C" division losers' bracket semifinals. Louisville took a 6-2 first quarter lead with its tough defense and balanced offense. In the second and third quarters, the teams played dead even with each team scoring nine points. More ...
