Snyder’s Druar takes fencing gold

Snyder resident Julian Druar captured the gold medal in individual foil at the 2006 Frosty’s Challenge fencing tournament Saturday, Dec. 9.

The competition was held at the Fencing Center of Buffalo in Cheektowaga. The Frosty’s Challenge competition was a direct elimination foil fencing contest for fencers ages 10-13.

The tournament featured a closely-contested fight for the gold medal, in which Druar narrowly defeated Noah Horan of Orchard Park in a 5-4 match, each competitor having won one bout already. The tournament format consisted of a five-touch pool-bout competition to seed, followed by five-touch, three-minute, direct elimination bouts, best two out of three.

Horan earned the silver medal, while Jayme Reichart of Marilla and Kris Kielich of East Aurora won bronze medals.

This was Druar’s first fencing medal, and first medal in Young Blades fencing competition.

The Fencing Center of Buffalo, the only full-time fencing school in the Greater Buffalo area, offers classes and summer camps for anyone age six and older. For more information about fencing in this area, visit the Web site at www.fencingbuffalo. com.
