Dr. Pol Cabi Akman, 80, who was once Chief of Staff at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, N.Y., died Friday, Feb. 15, 2006, in his Amherst home.
Born in Eskisehir, Turkey, he was the youngest of 18 children and served in the Turkish army.
Dr. Akman graduated from the University of Istanbul Medical School before emigrating to Toronto in 1957. He was employed by the Shouldice Surgery Clinic and completed post-surgical training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Canada.
Upon finishing his American post-surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania graduate school, he began his surgical practice at Jones Memorial in 1965. Holding several official positions within the hospital, including Chief of Staff, he also participated in a missionary trip to Haiti in 1987 where he performed over 100 surgeries for disadvantaged Haitians. He retired in 1988.
During retirement, Dr. Akman was employed by the New York State Social Security Disabilities as a consultant until 2002. Dr. Akman’s professional memberships included a fellow in the
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons. He was also a member of the New York State Medical Society and Allegany County Medical Society and belonged to Christ the King Church.
He was a master bridge player and world traveler.
Dr. Akman is survived by his wife, Mary Katherine; three daughters, Christobel Jevremovic, Isabell Posner, and Meaghen Mc- Dermott; one son, Paul Akman; and three grandchildren.
Prayers were offered Monday, Dec. 18 from Dengler and Roberts Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial from Christ The King Church.
