Defense, special teams key in East’s win over Timon Solid defense and special team goals combined for a 6-1 Williamsville East victory over Bishop Timon-St. Jude on Sunday at Buffalo State College. Up 2-1 in the third period, East’s Chris Fabozzi scored short-handed from Jon Toole at 3:20. East had just killed a five on four and five on three penalties to start the period. The Flames then tacked on three straight power-play goals in the next four minutes. Fabozzi set up Spencer Barrett, Eric Charlton tallied from Anthony Clair and Andrew Ross and Ross scored from Jordan Karnath and Toole. “We did a good job killing those penalties,” said East coach Mike Torrillo. “They could have easily tied it up at 3-3… After Chris scored, I don’t even know if they had a scoring chance after that.” Charlton tied the game at 1-1 from Clair and Ross at 4:16 of the first. Timon’s Mike McCarthy scored from Mike Cassidy 50 seconds into the game. Barrett added a second period goal from Dan Tyx. Matt Bradley recorded 26 saves. Torrillo also credits the defense from John Klimek, Mike Terryberry, Ross, Tyx, Kyle Murray, and Max Fogel for holding an opponent to one goal for the third straight time in the week. East also beat Williamsville South, 5-1, on Thursday on the Amherst Pepsi Center’s Feature Rink and St. Francis, 7-1, Saturday on the Olympic Rink. East took an early 2-0 lead over South in the first from goals by Mike DeStefano (Clair, Charlton) at 3:32 and Charlton unassisted 12 seconds later. “He took it from the defenseman, went in and caught it between the goalie’s legs,” said Torrillo. Kyle Smith (Jamie Turchiarelli, Clair) on the power play and Barrett (Smith, Fabozzi) even strength scored in the second. Fabozzi made it 5-1 in the third from Smith and Terryberry. Dustin Jones scored South’s only goal on the power play from Leo Schultz and Joel Zangara at 14:13 of the third. Bradley finished with 16 saves, including an early breakaway in the second. East outshot South, 37-17. Charlton scored twice and five other East players tallied in the St. Francis win. Charlton also had two assists. Barrett opened the scoring in the first on the power play from Smith. Clair made it 2-0 from Charlton and DeStefano. Smith (Barrett, Fabozzi), Charlton (Clair) and Fabozzi (Barrett) scored in the second. DeStefano (Charlton, Clair) and Charlton unassisted had third period goals. Brandan Wright scored for St. Francis on the power play from Tyler Underhill. Bradley and Jay Hall combined for 13 saves. East, 6-0, faces Kenmore East at 7 p.m. Thursday on the Feature Rink. Sweet Home The Panthers (5-0) learned an important lesson from the team’s 5-3 win over Kenmore East last Thursday on the Amherst Pepsi Center’s Feature Rink. “It was an good eye opener for us because you just can’t assume you’re going to win games,” said Sweet Home coach Dave Gerspach. “They definitely have a good team and play a real physical style.” Sweet Home’s Alex Esposito broke a 3-3 tie on a breakaway with 3:01 left in the game. Justin Reich was credited with the assist. Paul Campise scored an empty net goal from Ryan Marko and Dan Martino with four seconds to play. “It was our most impressive goal,” said Gerspach. “We got the puck down in their zone. Martino and Marko each could have scored but instead dumped it around the boards and Paul Campise put it in. It shows they were trying to win the game, not pad their stats.” Anthony Manzella (Marko) and Paul Campise (Martino, Marko) each scored on the power play in the first. James Cardinale added a goal in the third from Mike Campise and Esposito. Mike Gentner and Sean Debiew scored power-play goals for Kenmore East. Brett Marcotte also had a goal. Derek Mohney made 32 saves as Sweet Home outshot Kenmore East, 37-35. The Panthers bounced back with a solid 5-1 win over Williamsville South Saturday on the Olympic Rink. “It was the most complete game we have played,” said Gerspach. “We rolled four lines, played well in our defensive end and broke out well... The score could have been more. We hit four or five posts and missed a couple breakaways.” Marko had two goals and two assists. He assisted Esposito and Paul Campise (power play) on first period goals. Later, he took a Martino assist and beat the South goalie for the puck at 5:01 of the second and scored at 3:42 of the third from Esposito and Manzella. Cardinale also assisted on Campise’s goal. Manzella also scored for Sweet Home from Derek Cavalier and Matt Stewart. Sweet Home outshot South 29-25. Kevin Cottrell scored South’s only goal from Joel Zangara and Kevin Winnert. Sweet Home (5-0) hosts Ithaca, a top-ranked large school last year, at 8 p.m. Friday on the Feature Rink and plays St. Francis at 1 p.m. Sunday at Buffalo State College. e-mail: pnagy@beenews.com |
