Veteran awarded state’s highest military honor

New York State Assemblyman Jim Hayes, R-Amherst, recently presented New York’s highest military honor, the Conspicuous Service Cross, to John K. Wilson of Getzville at a special recognition ceremony in his Williamsville district office.

Wilson served in the U.S. Army on active duty from May 1978 through November 1983. He was assigned duties as first lieutenant military intelligence in the Federal Republic of Germany where he was decorated with a Meritorious Service Medal in recognition of exceptionally commendable service. In April 1983, he was promoted to captain of the 1st Battalion 46th Infantry, 1st Armored Division. He continued his military service in the U.S. Army Reserves until January 1989.

Wilson is vice president, administrative manager of Merrill Lynch offices in Williamsville, Lockport, Buffalo and Jamestown. He earned his undergraduate degree in German and Russian languages. Wilson has four children and resides in Getzville with his wife, Kristen.

Section 247 of the State Military Law created the Conspicuous Service Cross which is awarded by the governor in his capacity as commander-in-chief of the state’s armed forces. Under state law, the medal may be presented by a member of the State Legislature on behalf of the governor.
