South cross country hands out team awards

Williamsville South cross country recently held its 28th annual awards dinner.

Paul Mangold and Maxine Meyerhofer were named most valuable runners, John Stark and Gretchen Szal were picked as rookies of the year, Colleen Hurtubise won the coach's award and Dave Quinlan was chosen as most improved.

South coach Chuck Godfrey was extremely pleased with the efforts and accomplishments of this year's teams despite the poor fall weather.

"Mangold finished off a stellar career by becoming one of South's best runners ever while Quinlan continued his steady improvement by finishing tenth in the division race to become a second team all-star for the second year," Godfrey said. "Meyerhofer, a freshman sensation, finished first out of the South girls in every race and newcomer, Hurtubise, a captain, showed promise for the future."

Godfrey is optimistic for the future as the entire girls' team was underclassmen and seniors Mangold and Steve Belle are the only losses among boys who scored in meets.
