Driver charged in injury to 14-year-old boy

Amherst police have charged a 17-year-old male who allegedly backed his vehicle over a boy and then left him at a hospital.

The police accident investigation unit was called to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital around 11 p.m. Monday where a 14-year-old boy was in fair condition after being struck by a vehicle.

Interviews with the victim determined he had been hit around 8 p.m. on Old Meadow in Amherst by a car that was backing up. Police reported that Evan Zingaro, of Amherst, was trying to retrieve a compact disc from a passenger in the car when he allegedly backed up, knocked the victim down and drove over him.

Zingaro reportedly drove the victim to Millard Fillmore Suburban where he left him and made no report to police.

He has been charged with assault in the second degree - a D felony; leaving the scene of an injury accident, unsafe backing and driving in violation of a license restriction.

The victim was transferred to Women and Children's Hospital and is listed in fair condition.
