125 Years Ago

Dec. 1, 1881

We expect in about a week to be able to converse with Lockport friends via telephone, as a line from that place by way of Transit Road to Williamsville is now in progression. After reaching here it will connect with the Williamsville line to Buffalo.

During the fore part of last week, Mr. Leo Ehrman, an employee at Mr. Wendel Fogelsonger's quarries, accidentally slipped and fell into an ash pit at the lime kiln. He fell a distance of about ten feet, sustaining a fracture of the corticoid process of the scapula (in the shoulder joint) which will necessitate confinement at home for some time.

Mr. C.L. Haupt, jeweler in the Hopkins Block, has on hand a large stock of spectacles, suitable for all ages.

In Eggertsville, the shooter of Mr. J. Kable's dog has not made his appearance yet.

Matrimony seems to be contagious. Last week Mr. John Lehman of Clarence Center was married to Miss Helen Miller of Williamsville.

Rabbit hunters were out the fore part of the week, but met with poor success.

Nov. 29, 1906

Mr. Warren Summers recently accepted a position with the Thomas Automobile Club of Buffalo. For the past two years, Mr. Summers has been with the Canadian branch of the Oldsmobile Co., located at St. Catherines, Ont.

Mrs. Florence Forward (nee Ayer) was presented with a silver tea service by members of the Ladies Aid of the Baptist Church.

Dec. 2, 1931

The Amherst Police Department has received complaints concerning the bus service in the Grover Cleveland-Sheridan Drive section. Buses have been crossing the intersection at too great a speed.

The Lamm Post invites all to join the "Trip to the Old Plantation" at Neumann High School Hall on Tuesday, December 15. Cards, prizes, dancing, music and refreshments ensure a delightful evening for all who attend.

William Neff was home from Cornell University to spend the Thanksgiving vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Neff of Milton Street.

The Marx Brothers, celebrated comedians of screen and stage, will be seen in person at Shea's Buffalo beginning Friday.

Wanted: "Must have goat's milk or will buy goat; please quote price. Forster, 42 Smith Street."

Nov. 29, 1956

Work is progressing rapidly on the Nike installation on the Millersport Highway and Capt. Robert L. Hicks said the Army is anticipating moving in troops the latter part of December. Shortly after the first of the year, the base will be ready to launch guided missiles.

John W. Rane Jr. has been appointed director of engineering and sales by Bell Aircraft Corp.

A highly respected resident of Williamsville since 1939, Martin T. Culligan died Monday, November 26, 1956 at St. Mary of the Angels Home.

The Erie and Niagara Counties Regional Board is expected tomorrow to adopt a master plan which would make existing bikeways in Amherst a part of the 404-mile bikeway across the counties.

One of the largest piano sales transactions in local history has been consummated by the University at Buffalo and Denton, Cottier and Daniels. UB has taken delivery of 24 Steinway grand pianos, worth more than a quarter-million dollars, for the new music complex in Baird Hall.
