Squirt Grey Sabres tough out win over Bruins

The Squirt Grey Sabres and Squirt Bruins faced off at the Pepsi Center on Sunday. After an entertaining game, the Grey Sabres left the ice with a hard-fought 4-1 victory.

Through most of the first period, the two teams traded scoring opportunities with netminders Joe Burke of the Sabres and Jeremy Schwab of the Bruins leaving shooters on both teams guessing if any goals would be scored. Finally, at 5:40 of the first period, Gabe Jewula found the back of the net as a result of some nifty passing from JB Beck and Jack Cooper.

This goal was followed 90 seconds later by a blast from Austin Maciok assisted by Antonio Zendano and Connor Koester. Great individual efforts by Sarah Scolnick of the Bruins and Katelyn Koester of the Sabres were unsuccessful.

The second period began like the first with Bruins forwards Peter Muffaletto, Tyler Lisicki, Gianni Bordona, Steve Vukelic, Andrew Gross, Adam Arenault, Tommy Heyden, Frank Bodami, and Richard Bruno scratching their heads on how to beat Burke. The Bruin defense of Joseph Durkin, Luke Rehbaum, and Matthew Lesinski kept the crease clear and harassed the Sabre forwards.

For much of the second period, the Sabres were short-handed. It was only through hard work that they kept the surging Bruins off the score sheet. Near the end of the period, the Sabres stayed out of the penalty box and Zendano broke free to make the score 3-0 with assists to Peter Gossels and Jack Cooper.

The third period saw the Bruins taking more chances in an effort to erase the shutout. Still, the Bruins were frustrated. At 2:10, Bill Christ threw the puck at the net and it was deflected by a defenseman's stick through the five-hole to break the shutout bid. In an attempt to tie the game, the Bruins pulled their goalie in favor of an extra skater but Marc Giangreco made them pay with an empty net goal assisted by Emma Hubert and Connor Koester. Joe Arias and Brian Kowalski had fantastic games for the Sabres.
