This is the most important community resource in Williamsville. .Why has the library budget been cut when it clearly is the best and most efficient service that government offers? It has the lowest cost per circulation for the size of the town according to national ratings. Even non-users of the library, perhaps worried about taxes, should be impressed with this record and urge authorities to financially support this uniquely American institution - free public libraries. .A recently-resigned Amherst town supervisor assistant has found himself in a different position with a company called DRL. This also happens to be the same company that Supervisor Satish Mohan recently awarded a $17 million contract for tree removal services for our town. So how does a company who is not the lowest bidder end up with a contract, while at the same time the supervisor's right-hand man receives a cushy job with DRL? Can someone out there help me connect the dots on how this came to pass? .I'd like to respond to the caller last week who said school should be open all year. Spring break does not just benefit teachers; it benefits students too. If school was year-round, I doubt that anyone would be able to handle the amount of pressure being put on kids. .About the Tim Horton's on Main Street and the people who seem to think it is OK to block a main road in order to get coffee in the morning, I'd like to know where the police are when people are doing this. Drivers need to be in that lane to get on the 290 right there. I'm waiting for the day that I can sue them for sitting and blocking a main road every single mor ning. .Now that Election Day is over, will Susan Grelick please remove her illegally placed signs from all Amherst parks, museums, golf courses, rights-of-way, etc.? .Regarding the editorial in last week's Bee, where it asks, are our cars more important than our families, the answer is a definite yes in Amherst. I would like to address the subject of sidewalks. They are definitely a lower priority than our streets. There are a lot of examples of how poorly residents of Amherst treat sidewalks and how little they think of pedestrians who use them. Excellent examples are in Eggertsville, Snyder and the older parts of Amherst around Williamsville. A really good example is the area around Forest Elementary, where you walk on Reist Street through puddles and 70 to 80 feet of mud at the intersection of Union and North Forest, also between the church and school there is 70 to 80 feet of broken c o n c re t e . .To the debris removal service that worked in West Royal Parkway, next time you come into our town, please don't use the park as your own personal bathroom. .Employees of the St. Francis Nursing Home are being told to park on a narrow residential street (Hillside Drive) while also being told to not park on a far wider street (Reist Street) that allows parking on both sides of the street. This does not make any sense. Nursing home administrators need to be talked to and find a reason why this is happening. .Town of Amherst taxpayers should know that Supervisor Satish Mohan, when called on the carpet for delaying the hiring of good contractors to clean up the debris from the recent October storm, simply defended himself by saying his delays saved the town $2 million. He clearly pulled that figure out of the air, and soon that $2 million figure grew to $5 million and then to $19 million by his supporters in the media (WBEN 930). .I'm glad to see Bee Heard has found the dumbest person in our town - the one who mentioned the Amherst water treatment plant losing power and to take $60 million and put it into that. Tell this person that's a sewage treatment plant, not a water treatment plant. .Why is the Williamsville School District the only district in the area that is taking away two days of the spring Easter break? If neighboring districts, like Sweet Home and Amherst, are using staff development days, why doesn't Williamsville? Family plans for this break have been made far in advance due to its longstanding tradition and popularity in our area. Airline tickets are non-refundable and cost a family of four well over $1,000. Let the Williamsville District follow the more family-supportive and community-oriented plans of Sweet Home and Amherst Central. School board members are elected to serve the best interest of our community; it's not too late to revise this poorly thought-out plan. .Supervisor Mohan, when are the leaves going to be picked up? Snow will be flying soon, and we don't want the leaves plowed on our lawns. .I have to disagree with the assessment that the head football coach of the Williamsville East Flames said of their season being a disappointment. They beat their cross-town rival, Williamsville South; they beat Sweet Home Panthers who at the time were ranked number 3; and beat Amherst who was ranked number 10. To me, that is not a disappointing season! Based on all the players had to endure, I don't think they were inconsistent at all. In fact, I think just the opposite.
.I want to commend the owner of the 7-11 near North Forest and Maple for coming in during the storm. He was without power himself; there was no power at 7-11 and he helped us all. This convenience store is a model for this community. He is to be commended; he's always on time, and he's kind and courteous. |
