SS. Peter & Paul drops final swim meet to St. Mary's Lancaster

SS. Peter & Paul ended its swim season on a down note Sunday at the Sweet Home High School pool with a 145-104 loss to St. Mary's of Lancaster.

Despite the team's overall loss, SSPP found some consolation in watching its 11-up group dominate St. Mary's by winning seven of nine events. Julia Collins opened the meet winning the 200 freestyle going away and the 11-ups never looked back with Rachel Kuechle (200 individual medley), Maury Fields (50 butterfly), Laura Brick (50 backstroke) and Max Roehmholdt (50 breaststroke) all taking their events by comfortable margins. SSPP also won both relays thanks to the efforts of Brick, Kuechle and Collins who all swam both events, joined by Roehmholt in the medley and Fields in the free.

Second place finishes were recorded by Clare Costello (200 free). Fields (200 IM), Samantha Basile (50 back) and the free relay team of Basile, Claire Haumesser, Roehmholdt and Allyson Costanza. Third place points were earned by Haumesser (50 and 100 free).

The shoe was on the other foot for SSPP in the 9-10's and 8-unders as St. Mary's won both age groups in convincing fashion, spelling the difference in the overall score.

In the 9-10's, Matt Ruggiero won the 50 free in the closest race of the entire meet while teammate Marissa Olsen took the 50 back. Those were SSPP's only firsts. Jason Brick was SSPP's only second place finisher as runner-up in the 100 free. Third place points were won by Ruggiero (100 IM), Brian Costello (50 fly), Lauren Shine (50 back) and Peter Weimer (50 breast). The free relay team of Brick, Shine, Olsen and Costello finished second while the medley unit of Gina Nasca, Costello, Ruggiero and Shine placed third.

Evan Manna was SSPP's only winner in the 8-unders with a victory in the 50 free. Grace Galvin finished second in the 25 free for the team's only second place finish in the individual events. Third place finishes included Kurt Haumesser (100 IM), Nicholas Powell (25 free), Anna Maria Sauer (25 fly and 50 free), Jacob Barberio (25 back) and Charles Weimer (25 breast).

The meet did end on a bright note for the 8-unders with a win in the free relay by the team of Weimer, Haumesser, Galvin and Manna. The medley team of Galvin, Sauer, Haumesser and Manna finished third.
