South's season ends on penalty strokes

Williamsville South's bid to continue its best field hockey season ended on penalty strokes against Iroquois on Oct. 31 in the Section VI Class B semifinals.

Iroquois defeated South (11-4-2), 3-2, on penalty strokes to take the game 1-0. The game was scoreless through regulation and two ten-minute overtimes.

"The strokes situation is a tough way to end the season," said South coach Mary Ferenczy. "I am very proud of all my players. They tried their best and I am pleased with all of our accomplishments this season. They truly made it the best season ever. We will miss our seniors."

The South seniors are captains Rachel Dinunzio (18 goals), Claire Grerlach, Liz Gengo, Elena Hozdic, Robin Donovan (four goals), Emmy Schwartz, Micelle Rutecki.

South was no stranger to taking postseason games past regulation. A day earlier, South beat East, 3-2 in a shootout to win the game, 2-1.

In the shootout, sophomore Ashley Ferenczy, Hozdic and Gengo scored for South and Bridget Steele and freshman JV call-up Samantha Frank tallied for East.

"Megan Hull was in goal for South," said coach Ferenczy. "She did an outstanding job. It was a well played game by both teams."

DiNunzio scored just before halftime to put South ahead 1-0, assisted by Lauren Falzone. East's Megan Seward tied the game at 1-1 in the second half.

Laura Price, Aleece Burgio and Amy Buffomante played great defense, East coach Kate Zgoda said.

East beat blanked Eden, 5-0, in the prequarterfinals. Frank scored three goals. Steele and Jenna Guadagnino had a goal and two assists. Courtney Hawkins added an assist. East finished 6-8.
