Despite only placing two of its five gymnasts in the top ten of events at Saturday's Section VI Championships at Williamsville South High School, Williamsville South managed to finish fourth out of 15 teams.

South coach Kurt Stumpf said his team could have placed a little higher.

"At that meet, everything is so close," he said. "We were probably a point out of second. Having less kids to count scores makes it even harder but I was pleased with how we did. A fall here or fall there we could have been second."

South had 103.175 total points, less than a point from third-place Frontier (103.750).

South junior Kristina Arcury and her younger sister, seventh grader Kailyn, both qualified for the New York State Championships next March.

Kristina qualified in beam (first, 9.475) and vault (fourth, 8.875); Kailyn is headed on bars (fourth, 8.7).

Kristina was fourth all-around with 35.8 points; Kailyn was eighth at 34.875. Kristina was fifth on floor exercise (9.2) and tenth on bars (8.25). Stumpf said Kristina slipped up on bars but rebounded by winning beam.

Kailyn was tied for eighth on beam (8.9) and seventh on floor exercise (9.05), just missing states. Stumpf said Kailyn fell on her first event (vault) but hit every other event.

Kat Scimia (6.7, beam; 7.65, floor), Amy Stanley (8.1, floor; 8.1 vault; 7.8 beam; 7.45, bars; 31.45 all-around) and Marisa Stumpf (8.4, vault; 8.35, floor; 8.3, beam; 6.625 bars; 31.675 all-around) also competed for South.

Also advancing to states are Frontier's Kelly Young, Hamburg's Danielle Hover and Lew-Port's Deanna Favaro (all-around); Lancaster's Amanda Recor and Christine DelPrince (vault); Recor and Frontier's Kelsey Kryszak (bars); Hamburg's Taylor Wierzba and DelPrince (beam); and DelPrince and Maryvale's Erica Gasiecki (floor).

Williamsville North

The Lady Spartans were seventh overall with 84.75 points. Sarah Carbrey led North with a 8.1 on floor, 7.65 on beam, and 7.75 on vault. Lily Jagodzinski (8.5, floor; 7.6, beam; 7.3, bars); Megan Dressel (8.2, floor; 9.0, vault; 6.8, bars); Sarah Mikulski (7.675, vault); and Steph Meholick (7.175, beam) also competed.

Amherst Central

The Lady Tigers were ninth overall (48.775), led by Dana Ruh. Ruh finished with a 32.65 all-around score (8.45, vault; 8.4, floor; 8.25, beam; 7.55 bars).

Annalise Polvino and Jordan Pescrillo competed on vault (8.075) and beam (8.050), respectively.

Sweet Home

Sweet Home finished tenth overall (40.875), led by Jamie Farrell's 12th place finish on floor (8.7). She also had a 8.275 on beam, 8.125 on vault, and 7.725 on bars for a 32.825 all-around score. Carissa Turner competed in vault (8.05).
