Sports Briefs Emily Warren, a freshmen for the Mercyhurst College Lakers field hockey team, scored four goals in her team's 9-2 win over Houghton College on Oct. 31. She ended her season by tying for the most number of game-winning goals (2) as well as tying as a leading scorer for the team (7). She also tied the school record for most goals scored in one game (4). Sophomores Jessica Ortman and Jenna Ortman, both of Williamsville, registered top-10 finishes for the University at Albany at the America East Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28 hosted by the University of Maine. Jessica Ortman paced the Great Danes' women, covering the course in 17:36.60 and coming in sixth place. Jenna Ortman finished eighth in a time of 17:47.90. The women's all-conference team, which is made up of the top 10 finishers in the event, included both Ortmans. The Great Danes will compete at the NCAA Regional meet in Bronx, N.Y., on Saturday, Nov. 11. Jillian Gately of Amherst was 1 of only 100 junior figure and hockey skaters from the entire Northeast U.S. region to be selected to skate in a show with national and world champions at the Stars, Stripes, and Skates ICEtravanganza Show on Sunday, Oct. 22 at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. Gately participated in the recent Stars, Stripes and Skates Talent Search in the Olympic Rink in Lake Placid, N.Y. where dozens of young figure and hockey skaters between ages 4 and 19 took the ice in an "American Idol"-type program where they were judged by the audience solely on their performance acumen. Clarence native and Colgate University sophomore Matthew Rogowski recently competed at the prestigious "Head of the Charles" Regatta in Boston, Mass.. His Colgate boat took first place in the men's collegiate four competition, finishing 11 seconds ahead of second place R.I.T. and 30 seconds ahead of third place Boston College, in a field of 28. Rogowski, who played on championship soccer and basketball teams at Canisius High School, began rowing in his freshman year at Colgate and has quickly established himself as a solid Division I college rower. He is also affiliated with Buffalo's West Side Rowing Club as a competitor and was an instructor for the club's summer "Learn to Row" program. Williamsville East graduate Pat Occhiuto scored Geneseo State College's only goal in the team's 1-0 SUNYAC finals win over Fredonia on Nov. 4. Nichols grad and Snyder resident Joe Walter was named to the All-Tournament team for the weekend. East grad Dan Spada is also on the team. Geneso advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament against Nazareth from Rochester in a first round game. Amanda Dory, a Sweet Home graduate and Amherst resident, won the 1-meter (228.95) and 3-meter (206.35) diving competitions for Buffalo State College Nov. 4 against William Smith College. |
