Cross Country Four Town of Amherst cross country runners qualified for this Saturday's New York State Championships at Warwick Valley High School (Section IX) outside of Middletown, N.Y. after placing in the top five at last Friday's Section VI Championships at Long Point State Park in Bemus Point, N.Y. The sectional race was under snowy, icy and muddy conditions. Amherst Central's Brenna Symoniak and Sweet Home's Megan Niblock advanced for the girls while Sweet Home's Jacob Hagen and Williamsville North's Chris Deptula qualified for the boys. Amherst Central The Lady Tigers did not meet its preseason goal of repeating as section champs, placing third in Class A with 75 points. Starpoint won the race (59) followed by Lake Shore (61). "We're disappointed that we didn't finish first," said Amherst coach Bob O'Donnell. "That had been our goal but Starpoint and Lake Shore were just a little bit better that day. The girls tried their best, it just didn't happen." Brenna Symoniak finished second with a time of 20:42. "The conditions favored her," said O'Donnell. "They had six inches of snow on the ground. It was 35 degrees. She's light so it helped her out." Senior Arielle Januszkiewicz missed out on the state meet for the first time, placing seventh in 21:14. The top team plus the top five individuals in each class qualify for states. Erin Cotter (22:56), Sarah Lister (22:56), Tori Sosnowski (23:29), Claire Wietig (23:42) and Diane Herzog (25:14) also ran for Amherst. "Some of the kids were hurt at the beginning of the season and the layoff (from the snowstorm) didn't help, even though they trained by themselves," said O'Donnell. "I think Lake Shore didn't miss any school. Starpoint was off for two days. We were off for 10 days." "They worked real hard," he added. "They kept together even during the adversity. They did their best for the conditions and what we were up against. I'm pretty proud of them." The Amherst boys finished 11th on Class A with 261 points.Freshman Steve Dalton led Amherst in 19:55. Andy Wong (20:10), Jeremy Jones (20:39), Nick Reynolds (20:50), Andy Taube (21:32), Elliot Bible (21:37) and Billy Wieczorek (22:39) also ran.
