Ellen G. Johnston, 77, of Williamsville, a retired bookkeeper, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, in Sisters Hospital.
Born in Buffalo, the former Ellen Grieser graduated from Buffalo Public School No. 61 and Bennett High School in 1946.
After high school, she worked as a bookkeeper for several insurance firms, including AETNA Insurance Co. in Buffalo, then for the Emil A. Kratzer Insurance Co. in Amherst, retiring in 1998.
Mrs. Johnston was a longtime member of Central Presbyterian Church where she was baptized, confirmed, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and served several terms as a Deacon. She also was a member of the Women's Circle.
An excellent athlete, she had played on a women's softball team and enjoyed badminton, volleyball and croquet.
During World War II, she and her older sister started a patriotic club for young neighborhood children called the Young Americans Club. She also served a short time in the Navy's Women's Reserve Unit.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Robert C. Johnston; two sons, Peter and James Johnston; two sisters; Shirley Blaser and Sharon Smith and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12 in North Presbyterian Church, 300 North Forest Road.
