North, East girls tennis excel at ECICs The Williamsville North and Williamsville East varsity girls tennis teams had a great showing this past weekend at the ECIC girls tennis singles and doubles tournament at the Village Glen Tennis and Fitness Center. North qualified two girls in singles (Tina Miller, first and Andrea Lovrincevic, sixth) and a duo in doubles (Esha Dasgupta and Jackie Mistretta, fifth) for the Section VI Championships which were held Monday and Tuesday at Lakewood YMCA in Jamestown. Results were unavailable before The Bee went to press. East placed three girls in singles (Miranda Podlas, second; Monica Vieth, fourth; Sheila Joshi, seventh) and both doubles teams (Alyssa Drozynski and Emma Manuel; Cassy Albano and Tiffany Hartman). On Sunday, Miller, a freshman, won her third straight ECIC tennis title in a grueling, one-day tournament. After earning a bye in the first round, Miller beat John F. Kennedy's Courtney Smith in the second round, Vieth in the semifinals and a 7-5, 6-4 win over Podlas in the finals. Lovrincevic, a sophomore, qualified sixth. She won her first round match against Iroquois' Kim Suffaletto then fell to No. 2 seed, Lancaster's Jenn Ickowski. Lovrincevic fought her way back through the consolation bracket before beating Joshi, who finished seventh. Lovrincevic then lost to Smith. In the doubles tournament held Friday and Saturday, Dasgupta and Mistretta, who qualified for sectionals two seasons ago, placed fifth. Dasgupta boasts a resume of New York State contender last year with a win into the second round. This year, Dagupta and Mistretta, seeded third, received a bye in the first round, beat Hamburg, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round then lost to Alden's Ashley Chevalier and Allison Koslowski, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). On day two of the tournament, the duo faced Clarence in the back draw winning in a mini-set match-up 4-5, 4-2, 5-4 (7-2). North marked their spot at five with a decisive win over Alyssa Drozynski and Emma Manuel, 4-0, 4-1. Drozynski and Manuel finished sixth overall. North's other doubles team - freshman Kelley Matthews and eighth grader Maddie Robinson - beat Tonawanda in a three-setter but fell to Orchard Park's Caroline Bristol and Brittany Klotzbach. Albano and Hartman lost in the semifinals to OP's Carrie Wickline and Kate Ross, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Williamsville South's doubles team of Ellen Meyers and Rosana Dziama lost in the second round to Clarence. |
