Norman W. Scull, retired Amherst Police captain

Norman W. Scull, 78, a retired Amherst Police Department captain, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, in Port St. Lucie, Fla., after a lengthy illness.

Born in Scranton, Pa., Mr. Scull had been a resident of Amherst most of his adult life.

Mr. Scull was a member of the Amherst Police Department for nearly 38 years. Before retiring in 1991, he was promoted to the ranks of lieutenant and captain.

Mr. Scull was a co-founder of the Police Underwater Rescue Team in New York and was the recipient of the Amherst Bee's Award for Outstanding Officer of the Year for two years. He was a member of the Captain and Lieutenants Association of Western New York, Amherst Police Club, International Police Association Region 26, with whom he was an officer for 13 years, and the Amherst Masonic Lodge No. 981.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and was a Seabee in the Naval Construction Force.

Mr. Scull received a Bachelors of Science degree from University at Buffalo. He was a volunteer criminal investigative aide for the Port St. Lucie Police Department for four years.

He loved fishing, bowling and golf.

Mr. Scull is survived by his wife, Marilyn Scull; former spouse, Rita Creighton; three daughters, Bonnie Cienek, Denise and Susan; a son, Norman; a stepdaughter, Susan Olivos; a stepson, Scott R. Lackey; two brothers, Gerald and Harry; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Oct. 25 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
