Norman W. Scull, 78, a retired Amherst Police captain, formerly of Amherst, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Born in Scranton, Pa., Mr. Scull received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University at Buffalo.
He was a member of the Amherst Police Department for nearly 38 years, retiring as captain.
Mr. Scull was co-founder and headed the Amherst Police Underwater Rescue Team and was recipient of the Amherst Bee's Award for Outstanding Officer of the Year twice. He also received numerous merit awards and a medal for outstanding service.
Mr. Scull was a member of the Captain and Lieutenants Association of Western New York, Amherst Police Club, International Police Association Region 26 where he was an officer for 13 years, Amherst Masonic Lodge No. 981, St. Lucie County Shrine Club, American Legion Post 126, and Veterans of Foreign War Post 10132, BPOE Lodge 1520.
He was also a volunteer criminal investigative aide for the Port St. Lucie Police Department.
Mr. Scull served in the Navy during World War II and was awarded the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, and Asiatic Pacific Medal.
Mr. Scull is survived by his wife of 35 years, Marilyn Ryan; two daughters, Denise of Key West, Fla. and Susan L. Olivos of Port St. Lucie; a son, Scott R. Lackey of Lake Worth, Fla; two brothers, Gerald of Clarence and Harry of Springville; and three grandchildren.
A memorial Masonic service and tribute by the Port St. Lucie Police Department will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27 at the Byrd Young & Prill Chapel in Port St. Lucie, Fla. There will also be military honors by the Navy.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 68 Eagle St., Williamsville.
