St. Benedict's captures league title

St. Benedict's varsity baseball team won its first league title since 1999 after defeating St. Mark's, 4-3, in the championship game of the Bishop Turner Division of the Diocesan Parochial Baseball League. St. Benedict's league record improved to 8-0, 17-1 overall.

The Tigers will take on St. Christopher's in the first round of the 16-team Catholic School Diocesan Baseball playoffs.

St. Benedict's came into the championship game having won all seven of their league games and looking to secure a No. 1 seed.

The Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when leadoff man Patrick Glose reached base, stole two bases, and came home on an infield hit by Sean Tenney.

The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth when Peter Gregory and Marc DiLeo scored to increase the lead to 3-0. Patrick Glose scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth by walking, stealing his third base of the day, and coming home on a two-strike single by second baseman Paul Boerema.

The Tigers' pitching and defense withstood a couple of rally attempts by St. Mark's to tie the game. In the sixth inning, a bases loaded groundout ended one attempt, while Gregory struck out the last batter in the top of the seventh to strand a runner at third base and give the Tigers the league championship.

Sean Tenney and Gregory combined to limit St. Mark's to six hits while striking out eight.

Members of the St. Benedict's team are Boerema, Derek Fraas, Zac Garlick, Glose, Gregory, Sean Tenney, Dylan Beres, Dylan Blujus, Jamal Davis, Nick DeJoy, DiLeo, Bobby Graczyk, Sam Insalaco, and Brendan Tenney.
