Three elementary schools broken into Amherst police are investigating three elementary school break-ins that took place recently. Police were called at 6:25 a.m. Monday to Heritage Heights Elementary, 2545 Sweet Home Road, about damage to the school. Criminal mischief was reported when police found racial slurs spray-painted on the parking lot and rear of the building, as well as in the maintenance office. A door handle to the maintenance office had been broken, and the spray paint used was allegedly from the school. Police were also called to Smallwood Elementary at 9:30 a.m. Monday when it was found that the screen to the custodian's office had been cut, and entry gained by the suspects. Patrols used the K-9 unit and searched rooms. Computer equipment was reported missing.. A third school called police at 4:49 a.m. Tuesday regarding a potential burglary at Maplemere Elementary, where a broken door was found. Pry marks were found on the door, and the damage totaled about $300. A person making a delivery to the school noticed two males inside the building and called police. Police suspect that when the men saw the headlights from the delivery vehicle they ran out of the school. Police continue to investigate all three reports. |
