+ A MINUTE TO SPARE - By 11:30 p.m. Monday the Amherst Town Board had completed its agenda. The third time was the charm for the board members to meet their new deadline. After suspending the rules and deliberating past midnight on Sept. 5 and 18 they finally were able to finish business before the newly adopted deadline. Now let's hope it wasn't a fluke but instead a sign of efficient government coming to the town. The Town Board members still have some work to do on repeating each other and explaining every little reason why they vote, but there was also some important business taken care of, and that's what meetings should be about - not soapboxes.

INSPECTORS NEEDED - The Amherst Democratic Committee is seeking registered Democrats to serve as election inspectors for the general election to be held Nov. 7. Inspectors operate the voting machines and keep track of which registrants vote during Election Day. They also read the results for their assigned precinct once Election Day ends. Each inspector will need to work from 5:30 a.m. to approximately 9:15 p.m. with two, one-hour breaks during the course of the day. Election inspectors will receive $132 for the day. Registered Democrats who wish to serve as an inspector on Nov. 7, should contact Craig Bucki or Deborah Bucki, the Amherst Democratic election inspector co-coordinators, at 688-0697, or via e-mail at debbucki@aol.com.

REMINDER - Amherst Police Chief John Moslow reminds women to be careful on the town's bike trails. Following the tragic event in Clarence this past weekend he cautions women to never go on the trails alone and to be aware that trails have been a site for predators.

CONGRATULATIONS - Approximately 20 teachers, staff and parent volunteers completed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator training at St. Benedict School in Eggertsville. Madison McCarthy Cardiac Care Coalition for Children donated an AED machine to the school. The training course was part of the requirement for installation of the machine. The not-for-profit organization was started in 2001 in memory of 5-year-old Madison Lee McCarthy, who went into cardiac arrest that year at a Southtowns Catholic school. MMCCCC also donated funds to Ryan's Hope Foundation, which was formed in December 2002 after 11-year-old Ryan Markel drowned during swim class at a school in Depew. The foundation provides CRP/AED training for adults, children and infants.
