St. Gregory's 'A' opens baseball season 3-0

The St. Gregory the Great "A" baseball team started the fall season with three impressive wins. By the end of the week, they were in first place.

St. Greg's opener was a rain-shortened, 26-2 win over St.

Andrew's of Kenmore. The game featured four big hits and four RBIs each from Kevin O'Connell, Sean Maher, and Nick Gagliardi. The game also unveiled the brilliant defensive play of newcomer, seventh grader Ryan Bonville, at first base and seventh grade pitcher, Joey Gianturco, who threw three scoreless innings.

The following contest witnessed a tight well played game by St. Gregory's and St. Christopher's on their home field in Tonawanda. St. Greg's won 8-2 but the final score was not indicative of the close hard fought game by St. Christopher's.

The game featured several great stops by Tim Hartigan at shortstop and Matt Spychala at second base. Pat Papia continued his solid play at third and followed it up with a two-inning save.

St. Gregory's slowly padded the lead inning by inning with solid hits from Papia, Bonville, Gagliardi, O'Connell and Zak Jehle.

The game also highlighted the throwing of O'Connell, who picked off three runners from the catcher position.

Michael Biscotto showed off a solid outfield with his play in center and also knocked in two runs.

Gianturco picked up his second win on the mound, allowing only one hit and no runs over five innings.

St. Gregory's closed out the week with a solid 10-0 win over St. Amelia's of Tonawanda. Papia took over with three doubles and six RBIs. Alex Heuer showed his versatility with solid play at shortstop and left field. Bonville knocked in two runs and Gianturco continued his perfect season, picking up his third win. He allowed only two hits and maintained his perfect zero ERA. Biscotto and O'Connell each pitched a scoreless inning.
