Sports Brief The Buffalo Defenders Girls AAU Basketball Organization will be having open workout/clinics for 12and 13-year old girls on Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 7 at St. Mary's School for the Deaf, 2253 Main Street, Buffalo. The 12-year-old players will compete from 4:30 to 6 p.m. followed by the 13-year-old players from 6 to 7 p.m. A current AAU membership card is required and can be applied for upon arrival. The Buffalo Swimkins Synchronized Swimming team is hosting a free introduction to synchro session for ages 8 to 10 from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 14 at Transit Middle School, 8730 Transit Rd, East Amherst. Interested girls should be able to swim one lap of front crawl and backstroke. Any knowledge of breaststroke or sidestroke is great. Girls should feel comfortable swimming in deep water. Girls may be invited to join the competitive team at the end of the free session. Swimkins Synchronized Swimming Inc. is a registered member of United States Synchronized Swimming and just celebrated their 40th year. To register, call Kristina at 627-0036. For more information, visit www. swimkins. org. Mathewson McCarthy Baseball will hold tryouts for the 2007 tournament teams at the Wehrle Drive complex on Saturday, Sept. 30. The 8U and 10U tryouts are at 10 a.m. followed by the 9U and 11U at noon and 12U at 2 p.m. Players should be prepared to participate in baseball skill evaluations. The Amherst Girls Softball League will be holding tryouts for the 2007 10 and under Amherst Lightning fastpitch travel softball team from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday Sept. 30 at the Amherst Pepsi Center, 1615 Amherst Manor Dr. East Amherst resident Jenna Gage made five saves to pick up her third shutout for the Canisius College women's soccer team as the Lady Golden Griffins blanked Saint Francis, 1-0, on Sunday. The senior kept the Red Storm off the scoreboard by stopping a couple of breakaways in the second half. |
