DeSales overwhelms SSPP in Catholic League meet

Don't look now but there's a new powerhouse in the Neuman Catholic Swim League.

SS. Peter & Paul of Williamsville on Sunday felt the full brunt of DeSales Catholic's emergence as a legitimate contender as the best all-around team in the NCSL as the Lockport team overwhelmed SSPP, 166-83.

Not only did DeSales win 17 of 25 events, it also took second place in 16 races, underscoring the team's tremendous depth and talent.

SSPP won four of seven individual races in the 11-ups, with Rachel Kuechle taking the 200-yard free, Maury Fields (100 free), Laura Brick (50 back), and Max Roehmholdt (50 breast).

Fields (200 individual medley), Brick (50 free) and Kuechle (50 butterfly) also earned second place finishes while third-place finishes were recorded by Kathleen Ruggiero (200 IM) and Julia Collins (50 free).

Brick, Roehmholdt, Ruggiero and Collins placed second in the medley relay and the team of Allyson Costanza, Roehmholdt, Collins and Kuechle was third in the free relay.

In the 9-10's, Marissa Olsen was the lone winner for SSPP, finishing first in the 50 back while Peter Weimer was the only second place finisher, in the 50

breast. Third place finishes were recorded by Matt Ruggiero (100 IM), Jason Brick (50 free), Caitlyn Novak (50 fly) and Susan Venditti (100 free). Gina Nasca, Weimer, Venditti and Kelsey Sommer were third in the medley relay. Brick, Lauren Shine, Brian Costello and Olsen captured second in the free relay.

SSPP won three of six races in the 8-unders with Charles Weimer taking the 50 fly, Evan Manna

winning the 50 free and Kurt Haumesser placing on top in the 50 breast. Anna Marie Sauer placed second in the 50 breast. Third-place points were gained by Haumesser (100 IM), Jacob Mertz (25 free), Grace Galvin (50 free and 50 back). Riley Noe, Brynn Cowe, Jacob Barberio and Mertz finished second in the medley relay as did the free relay squad of Weimer, Galvin, Haumesser and Manna.
