St. Gregory the Great swimmers roar past St. Mary's of Lancaster St. Gregory the Great's swim team showed talent and depth with a decisive 196-53 victory over St. Mary's of Lancaster last Sunday. The highlights of the meet were five broken school records. In the 11-and-older division, the medley relay team of Patrick Munroe, Jeff Ahrens, Alec Pokornowski and Leia Federiconi smashed the old school record by 6.5 seconds to finish in first place with a 2:04.52. Federiconi was on fire in the 50 breaststroke, breaking the girls' record with a 35.79. Ahrens broke the boys' 50 breast record with an impressive 36.23. Pokornowski broke an 11-year old 200 freestyle record last week with a 2:05.66 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Pokornowski, Ahrens, Federiconi and Munroe slashed the school record with a fantastic 1:49.58 first place finish. In the 9-10 division, Daniel Dirrigl showed his strength by breaking the boys' 50 butterfly record in 39.41. The 8-and-under division had great success with many first and second place finishes. Abby Shanahan took a first in the 100 IM and a second in the 25 fly. Alexa Bradley had first in the 25 fly and second in the 100 IM. Michael Tierney added two second places in the 25 and 50 free. Madeline Stamm took first in the 25 breast with Maeve Christ taking first in the 50 free and 25 back. The medley relay of Christ, Stamm, Bradley and Tierney put up a first place win with second place finishers Caitlin Dwyer, Ryan Downing, Abby Shanahan and Olivia Vasquez close behind. The freestyle relay of Downing, Dwyer, Vasquez and Margaret Niederpruem finished first and Emma Murphy, Kendal Rehak, Julia Tudor and Emma Gervase came in second. St. Gregory's 9-10 division starred Anna Rubino in two first place finishes 100 IM and 50 back. Dirrigl took first in the 50 fly with Rena Steinig taking first in the 100 free and second in the 50 fly. Billy Christ and Allan Collins finished with a 1,2 punch in the 50 free. Both 9-10 relays took first place with the medley relay of Rubino, Olivia Macdonald, Steinig and Christ followed by the freestyle relay of Christ, Allan Collins, James Pokornowski and Dirrigl. The 11-and-over division could not be beat, finishing first and second in every event. Patrick Munroe and Stephen Tramposch put up strong first and second place finishes in the 200 free. Federiconi and Theresa Munroe coasted to a first and second in the 200 IM. Ahrens and Mike Arena followed up with a first and second in the 50 free. Caroline Niederpruem and Diana Donnarumma teamed up to take the top spots in the 50 fly with Alec Pokornowski and Margaret Christ finishing first and second in the 100 free. Christina Seminara and Taylore Passero touched .3 seconds apart to win the 50 back. Christ and Kristen Hennessey took top points in the 50 breast. In addition to the two record breaking first place finishes in the medley and freestyle relays , there was the second place medley relay of Munroe, Christ, Niederpruem and Donnarumma. Rounding out the very successful day was a second place for the freestyle relay of Niederpruem, Munroe, Donnarumma and Arena. St. Gregory the Great takes on SS. Peter and Paul at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 1 at Sweet Home High School. |
