South boys soccer needs to finish games Williamsville South's 2-1-1 record in ECIC Division III boys soccer could be 4-1 according to coach Peter Sugg but said it's not because of his team's inconsistency on offense. "The fact that we have a tie and loss in the league is disappointing because I think we've played better than that," said Sugg. "I tell the kids every game, 'it's just a matter of taking advantage of opportunities.' It's been frustrating for the kids too." "The chances have been there," he continued. "We just have to put them in more consistently and make things a little easier on ourselves." The only game this season where South did not bury its chances was against Cheektowaga, who defeated South, 5-2 last Friday. South was undefeated at the time. South's Matt Kwarta scored 29 seconds in but Cheektowaga proceeded to tally four times in the next 20 minutes, three coming from Sweden exchange student Erik Kizilo. Brian Van ee tacked on a Billie goal in the second half. "Defensively, we've been pretty good," said Sugg. "Prior to this game, our defense only allowed two goals. We just broke down in all areas on Friday." South went 2-0-2 in its other four games, defeating Depew, 3-1, last Wednesday and Pioneer, 3-0, on Sept. 12 and tying Amherst, 0-0, and Frontier, 1-1, on Sept. 7 and Sept. 18, respectively. Sugg said his team could have scored more goals in all games. Against Depew, Kwarta scored at the 34-minute mark of the first half. Schwartz added two second-half goals six minutes apart. "We controlled the game and probably should have had two or three other goals in the first half," said Sugg. Schwartz scored with 30 seconds left in the first half to give South a 1-0 lead over Pioneer. Marc Morelli and Kwarta added second-half goals at the 31and 34-minute mark, respectively. Goalie Pat Pidgeon earned the shutout. "That was probably the best game we played all year," said Sugg. "I was happy with the way we played but also very frustrated because we really controlled the game. To be only up 1-0 at halftime was disappointing. It was a game that we should have probably been up three or four." "We played a pretty complete game," Sugg continued. "We never really let down. Even as much as we were struggling and not scoring on the chances we were getting, we just kept going at them and kept getting more chances and some point you'd hope they would go in and a couple did." Sugg said his team outplayed Amherst in the first half. "We should have won the game in the first half," said Sugg. "We hit a post and cross bar and their goalie made some good saves. The fact that we didn't put it in our chances cost us from basically not winning the game. The second half was sloppy and we seemed to get a little tired. They probably were better than us in that half." Chris Toone scored South's only goal against Frontier. South hosts Maryvale at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and travel to Lancaster at 4 p.m. Friday. They played Starpoint Tuesday but results were unavailable before The Bee went to press. "If we can get out of this week 2-1 and both wins were league games, I'd be thrilled," said Sugg. e-mail: pnagy@beenews.com |
