DiNunzio leads South to unbeaten start The Williamsville South varsity field hockey team is living up to preseason expectations of wanting to have its best ever season and Rachel DiNunzio is leading the way. South (6-0-1 overall, 4-0-1 in league) defeated reigning Section VI Class B champ Amherst, 2-1, on Sept. 11, Eden, 3-0 on Wednesday, and East Aurora, 6-0 last Friday. DiNunzio leads South with 12 goals. She scored the game winner against Amherst from a corner shot from Liz Gengo, added two goals and an assist versus Eden, and had a hat trick against East Aurora. DiNunzio and Gengo hooked up for South's first goal against Eden five minutes into the first half as DiNunzio tallied. Michelle Rutecki scored from Claire Gerlach for South's first goal against Amherst. Sarah Heidinger scored Amherst's goal. Lauren Falzone scored in the second half against Eden. Gengo added two assists. Meghan Hull tallied her first shutout in goal for the Lady Billies. Besides DiNunzio's hat trick, other goals scored against East Aurora came from Gengo, Gerlach and Falzone. Assists were credited to Ashley Ferenczy, Elena Hozdic and Gengo. |
