Sweet Home girls soccer splits games

Sweet Home varsity girls soccer saw the good and bad end of a 4-0 score last week.

The Lady Panthers lost to Orchard Park, 4-0, on Sept. 11 but responded two days later, blanking Lake Shore, 4-0, last Wednesday.

Orchard Park scored midway through the first half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Orchard Park scored three goals in the final 15 minutes.

"Orchard Park is the Section VI Class AA runner up from 2005," said Sweet Home coach Scott Martin. "They are a talented team, however we need to get better because these are the teams we will face at sectionals. We will be the smallest Class AA school for sectionals, moving up from Class A from last season."

Sweet Home's win over Lake Shore was helped by the return of goalie Angela Williamson, who had missed the first four games due to mononucleosis.

Williamson made nine saves to record the shutout.

"Having her back gives us a confidence that we were missing in the first four games," said Martin. "We are also able to play a different system which allows is to attack more."

Senior captain Rebecca Schnirel scored two goals and newcomers, Kelly Weber and freshman Rebecca White scored their first career goals.

"Hopefully this will give us some momentum heading into next week," said Martin. " We play three very important league games."

Sweet Home hosts Williamsville South Tuesday but results were unavailable before The Bee went to press. The Lady Panthers then play seven of their next eight games on the road, including contests at Iroquois and Hamburg, this Thursday and Friday, respectively. They return home on Oct. 13 against Iroquois.
