A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Saturday, Sept. 16 in St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church after prayers in the Dengler & Roberts Funeral Home for Edward P. Metzger Jr.
Mr. Metzger, 82, of Eggertsville, who
marketed golf carts and accessories and was a Navy flight instructor during two wars, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006, in Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Born in Lackawanna, Mr. Metzger was a graduate of South Park High School and attended Niagara University, Colgate University and UCLA.
A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Metzger was a flight instructor in Pensacola, Fla., California and Whidbey Island, Wash. He also was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He piloted the Corsair and the Navy's first generation of jets, and rose to the rank of lieutenant.
After completing his military service, Mr. Metzger ran Golfers' Clubhouse, which sold and serviced golf carts, from his Eggertsville home. He retired in the 1960s.
Mr. Metzger was an artist, working in watercolors and oils, carpenter and woodworker.
He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Audubon Men's Club. He shot a hole-in-one at the Lancaster Country Club in the 1980s.
Mr. Metzger is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan Marie Kullman Metzger; four sons, Edward P. III, Michael W., Mark J. and Timothy P.; four daughters, Patricia A. DeWitt, Suzanne, Kathleen Seigel and Mary Joan Gallivan; and a sister, Shirley Tillman.
